I often feel like a ***** when I see the projects people on this board tackle, mad respect to fabricators here.I'm of the opinion you are using the right product

But in this case I'm very confident about my knowledge, and spackle is not an adequate substitute for joint compound. It doesn't feather properly, and will not take well to taping.
And setting type compound, which you can use to tape but generally isn't good for finishing, doesn't shrink at all. Spackle is actually of the drying type, but is just intended for a different application.
To OP, great job on that, I think that the texture, as much of a pain as applying it is, will have let you get a much better blend then you would have ended up with if it was a flat finish. Good luck on the other bathroom!
