So for transparency, I am a mild hoarder And do trash pick from time to time. I have never bought a wheelbarrow, but I have five of them. It amazes me how this comes to be. People throw them out because they have rotten handles, a rusty bed, or, in the case of my blue Jackson, were cleaning out and it was curbside brand new with a flat tire. I have a grey Brentwood dually that as discarded for rotted handles, “frankenbarrow “ had a rotted bed and handles, but the bed was a really thick gauge metal, so street sign patches went in with sheet metal screws, and d handles came from a broken wheelbarrow on the side of the road that looked like it fell off a landscapers truck. “Patina” had rotted handles got metal Kobalt handles from Lowe’s and we are back in business! Love that the old Home Depot price is still visible $89.99 it must be pretty old for a true temper to go for that cheap. Finally there’s the green guy- given to me by a coworker who I helped move, she didn’t want to take it with her. It has the light gauge bed, wood handles that don’t have much longer to live, and a tiny front wheel/ tire mint, but clearly the lightest duty wheelbarrow true temper made at the time.5E6AAA18-A6C1-4826-9FF3-9EF14B749FFD.jpg

Never thought about "collecting" them, since I usually just end up tripping over the cheapie Menards plastic double wheel, I've had for years.

Usually utilized the yard tractor and dump trailer for moving most stuff.

Enjoy!

I rip a PT 2X4 for handles replacement, & use a router w/a wide-radius 1/4-round bit to contour the hand grip area. At H for H I found a solid wheelbarrow tire on an aluminum wheel, so no-more flats, and no wheel rim-rusting causing a tubeless failure. I also have brazed patches as-needed, and use galvanized carriage bolts for the bucket-to-frame connections. I'll often use fender washers in the floor of the bucket for a larger clamping surface. Since I rarely mix mud or concrete in a wheelbarrow, the projection above the floor of the bucket really isn't an issue.

We were getting a new roof on a rental and the company threw off the roof, a wheelbarrow that had failed somehow, I forget exactly, but I fixed it with material I had lying around. I think I had to use my HFT $38 'open-box' wire feed welder to fix the bucket braces. It has that same aluminum 'mag' wheel and a solid no-flat tire, so it should provide good service.

These three were all scavenged. I like the two-tire one for heavy loads, it's more-stable, as you would expect. Apart from transporting gardening/landscaping debris to the curb (municipal removal) about the heaviest workout any of these get, is to transport 2-1/2 gallon jugs of chlorine six at a time, from the pick-up to the pool deck.

Here's my interpretation of the old wooden wheelbarrows of my youth. I bought the wheel at a flea market, and built the wheelbarrow out of scrap wood and metal. The sides come off for bulky loads. We just use it as yard art, with a big pot of flowers from time to time.

I tear 'em down, weld up a frame from 1.25" sq tube, and add a no-flat tire. At this point they're basically zero maintenance and can't rack out of square when loaded

I didn't have a "fleet" until 2 weeks ago. My in-laws sold their house and moved to Florida, and my FIL was going to leave a bunch of stuff with the house including this old True Temper wheel barrow and two 100ft Craftsman heavy duty rubber hoses that had both been stored inside and come from an era when they were quality made. No way was I going to let that happen, I get enough use out of my Jackson (which I bought 9 years ago) and there's been times both my wife and I could use a wheel barrow at the same time. Wheel barrows are more handy for some jobs than getting out my old Wheel Horse and it's small trailer.

if you don't own a garden tractor a powered wheelbarrow might be a good idea, depends what you're moving over what terrain.

I got a like-new True Temper contractor's wheelbarrow from the curb. Metal tub, but a light duty design. Apparently tossed out because a bolt for one of the braces went missing. It has become my firewood wheelbarrow.

THE END OF THE 4 CU FT WHEELBARROW!!

I went to try to buy a new Ames/True Temper/ Blue Hawk 4 cu ft wheelbarrow.

They do not make them anymore! They were all made by Ames (I believe) and rebranded for Ace Lowes, etc.

My 20 year old true temper had a rotted and broken handle, and a crack in the tub at one of the bolt holes.

Rather than start a new 2-day project, I thought I would save time and buy new. I didnt want (or need) a 6 cu ft Jackson, althougj I lile their sturdiness.

Could not find a 4 Cu ft anywhere brick & mortar or online.

Amres does not even list a 4 cu ft on their website.

So I bought a v. Good condition Blue Hawk (Lowes - Ames) off of CL for $25.

Of course, then the need for upgrades kicked in.

I was pilfering the unistrut cross braces from my old model, and promised it to my next door neighbor for free.

After I had promised I realized yhe tub was the only thing holding one of the handles together.

At lowes, I found new HD handles for $16 ea - these are the 2x2 cross section handles from the Jackson type wheel barrow.

1-1/2 days later, with an extra $50 in cost, I installed the new handles on my Blue Hawk and painted everything. Replaced the plastic angles from the tub to the handles with pressure treated wood angles (much stronger). I used the old handle as a template for drilling holes, and the plastic angle as a template for the new wood angles.

Between the bigger handles, the unistrut cross bracing, and longer bolts, this 4 cu ft is solid as a rock.

I used the handles off of the Blue Hawk to repair the one to be given to my neighbor. So it willl last him until the tub fails in 5-10 years.

Plaatic tubs are available, but I don't like them.

Fialaja nice collection👍
The wheel barrel I own was bought 40+ years ago. Standard large tub with steel handles and pneumatic wheel.
I might have replaced the tire and tube, for sure the tube. It spends most of its life draped over my garden tiller to save the old B&S engine.
Your thread is very timely. I am giving my Grandfather’s WB to my daughter. After my GF was done with it it resided at the lake. Last year at the metal dump someone threw out a contractor grade WB with wood handles. All it needed was a nut to hold on the barrel to the frame. Dragged back my GF’s to put on Kijiji but my daughter wanted it so it is on its 3rd generation. Likely bought originally around 1955. May need a new wheel before it is handed off again. 😉
I’m guessing the grips are original because even as a kid I remember pushing that thing around giving my hound a ride. 😁

I have had an all steel wheel barrow with solid wheel that I got at Costco for about 18 years now and it is still super solid. The tub is getting pretty beat up from moving rocks around my yard but it should still last a good long while. I recently bought one of those gorilla yard wagons and really like it. I find myself using it more often than the wheelbarrow now. I also have an old plastic tub wheelbarrow that was given to me. I need to replace the wheel and clean up the handles, they are pretty weathered. It is super flimsy compared to the all metal wheelbarrow. If I decide to keep it I will need to do something to make it feel a little more sturdy. Long term I don't have need for that many wheelbarrows so I don't know how much I want to invest in the plastic tub wheelbarrow.
