today, we were working on a 2000 mercury sable, with the duratec motor.

i pulled the fuse for the fuel relay so the the car wouldn't pour fuel(doing intake gaskets and plugs). dad wanted me to disconnect the battery but i thought doing that would screw with the radio and the pass lock and key fob.

would a memory saver help with that? or would that of been a no go option?

do you use one? should you use one on all newer cars?

we need to pull disconnect the battery and clean the terminals tomorrow should i buy a saver?

thanks for any help you can offer.

you may loose the stations saved on your radio but thats about it, i dont think you need a memory saver for older model cars i only use the memory saver for the newer model cars like 07 and up mostly because of the radio passcode which im pretty sure you dont have on your sable...

also what about the number/code door pad and theft lock type of things. arn't they affected by this? im guessing not as my firebird wasn't but thats gm not ford.

so 07 and newer stuff has passcodes not anything older?

i have not been in a situation that number pads or key fob were affected while replacing/cleaning the battery....

again i havent seen (except from some honda/acura models) having passcodes on radios on older year vehicles...

I have an 06 Ford Freestyle and I have replaced the battery and had no problems other than the computer relearning and the radio presets.

We have memory code savers and never use them. Our model tells us if there is a draw and that is when they come out.

If a Radio needs a passcode like Honda or Acura should be in the owner's manual. If not they can call the Dealer with their VIN and get the code @ no cost to them.

Really helpful with BMW's that have anti-thief radio .. the anti-thief radio requires a code before you can reprogram or use after a battery has been disconnected.

I have yet to have an issue when pulling a battery. Not even on my dad's '12 CRV.

My '02 Sierra (bought new) has a security code for the radio. And my radio/cd is bottom-of-the-line. When I replaced the battery (two months shy of 8 years), the code was not in the owner's manual so I went to the dealer I bought it from. To their credit they spent 20-30 minutes figuring out the code. Now the code is in the owner's manual.

I use an EOBD memory saver, most newer cars the radio is built into the fascia so no probs.

Older cars tend to need a security code to activate the radio up to around 05 on Euro vehicles.

It also stops you losing power seat settings/electric window settings
And the clock/the ECU learned settings for a particular drivers style.

Most of these are easy enough to reset but if your a timed tech it helps a little

Use one when replacing battery in VAG vehicles or you will need a scanner to reset/relearn idle with electronic throttle control.
