Memory test for old auto mechanics

Ok, this one is for the senior mechanics out there.
The last car engines where you might have used this were produced in about 1950.

Can you identify this tool and its purpose?

That would be a keeper installer / remover. Used to hold the valve spring to get them off the stem.

Close enough. Another tool actually holds the spring, and these aid in installing keepers in flat head engines, where you are working "upside down".

I actually have five of them, three made by Sunnen, and two Blue Point.

1950? Chrysler still built flathead six engines in '59, maybe later in industrial applications. Also, the French military used flathead Ford V-8's through the '80's. Don't forget the Continental Red Seal engines, when did they quit building those?

Willys offered the flat head until the mid 1960s. You can still find those engines in use for agricultural use today. Damn things run forever

Those pliers have to be the strangest tool I've seen. If they didn't say S-O I'd think it was someone's get-rich-quick pipe dream.

I've got one of those Blue Points. I was gonna try it out reinstalling keepers on a 5.0 Ford.
