Menards Clearance Router Bits YMMV

Was in my local Menards today (Southtown Crossing in Fort Wayne, IN) and noticed they had a brand new line of router bits up on the wall, as opposed to the Bosch and (I think) Vermont bits they used to carry. Stumbled upon them in the big clearance section.

Got the pic below



Prices (L to R) were 10.99, 8.99, 8.99, 8.49. In some cases the discount was 50%, most on the wall were in the 30-50% off range with a WIDE selection left.

Just thought I'd throw this out there considering I found these to be very nice bits for the money.

Even better deal when you throw them in the 14% Bag. I bought a few the other night at the Toledo store. They only problem is they have hundreds just thrown in a big box in the clearance isle. Makes it kind of hard to find what you need.

What are some good bits to look for a beginner? I just bought a clearance combo plunge/fixed base Craftsman router, so if there are some good ones to learn with I can check for them.

Bosch is good, Vermont (Boschs lower end) is very decent. Buy them on Sunday with the 14% bag sale, 11% rebate and a 11% off gift card.

What are the new bits, Masterforce? Probably the same as VA if so

What are some good bits to look for a beginner?

Honestly, get THIS SET from Harbor Freight. They are cheap and contain the most common types of bits. That way you can figure out which ones you use the most and then buy those same bits from a better manufacturer (such as Whiteside, Freud, Eagle America, ect.).

Some will disagree about purchasing HF bits, but I've used this set for the past year and have never had one break apart or had any other issues with them. They do get dull fairly quickly, but that's why you experiment with these for a while and then upgrade to a better bit.

Oh, and when you do upgrade, make sure you get them with 1/2" shanks rather than the 1/4" shanks.
