I am designing a garage kit from Menards and would be living in it. Does anyone have any advice or insight on these menards kits? Can they be lived in? Truly clueless here so thanks in advance!

If it is the Standard Size garage kits, they are alright! You aren't leaving many details in your comment but I built one a while ago for "Cold Storage". It came out pretty nice but you do need to upgrade your materials list at the Store!

Obviously varies by location.......

Zoning ????? Permits ??????? Code enforcement????? Occupancy permit ???????
Water and septic and electric

Many areas have cracked down ..........building a garage.......then........it turns into residential house. Especially on tax collectors view point.

BIL tried it..........did not make it past permit stage and his was garage turned hunting camp turned part time home.

Can you get insurance on this? Even if you did get permits, I'd be worried about insurance. I was going to build a garage with a 1500 sqft loft, and live in that (then tear down existing house and rebuild in 5-10 years), but my insurance company said that, since the county considered it a garage, they wouldn't insure it as a residence. Once you've squared away the permit-ability of this, I would talk to an insurance company before starting.

Kits just contain the same materials you would use if building from scratch: 2x4s or 6s, rafters or trusses, sheathing, shingles, siding of your choice, window(s), door(s) - they've already done the takeoff. You have to provide the foundation.

There's a big gap in what different people consider ok to live in. I assume in MO you experience winter, so you better have them takeoff a finished, insulated interior.

So many questions to be left unanswered.
