After about 6 months of looking at tool boxes I finally purchased a Masterforce tool box bottom 41" from Menards. I thought this gave me the best bang for my buck. My plan was to by two or three (when money allows) and put a work bench on top as so many other people have done. Long story short I unloaded my box in my shop two days ago, I picked up the Menards flyer today and see they are having a Special Edition one on sale Friday, this one is Black (much more my style) however it show it has a different latch closing mech. Anyone know anything about these: Cheaper, the same, are they replacing the ones they are currently selling, are they available in multiple sizes etc. I don't want them to change styles on me and not be able to get another matching one and I don't want to go down in quality just to get a better paint color.

IIRC the black ones are a cheaper style. Not built as heavy as the grass green model. I happen to like the MasterForce boxes. I have two 41" bases, two side boxes, and the large 41" top box at home, and I have a 41" base and top box at work. For the money, you can't beat them I don't think. One of the members on here has bought the "Special Order" 56" bottom box. They don't carry them in the stores or at least the store that I go to doesn't have them. Here is the other thread on them http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12891&highlight=Masterforce&showall=1

Kevin, the box I'm talking about is one that I've never seen before in Menards until todays ad came out. It is not the black Permomax box they have been selling, this one looks like is mostly black with some green trim that I was hoping I could find a way to take off. It says something like SPECIAL EDITION Masterforce box. Is that the box you are talking about?

Not the same box then. I might have to make a trip to Menards to see it. I need to go there anyways.

I'll double check tomorrow. They are selling both top and bottom, but since I only need the bottom box its the only price I looked at and believe it was $330.

I went out this morning, but the flyers weren't out in the store yet, and I didn't see the new tool chest on the floor yet either.

The flyer is online now, and I kinda like the looks of it. I'll be out that way in the morning getting my hair cut, so I'll stop by again.

Top chest $269 (after $70 rebate)
Bottom cabinet $330 (after $130 rebate)

Both $599 (after $200 rebate)

It's advertised as 37" though. Not 41" like the other. With the mail in rebate. So you have to wait a while for your money. Might be good.

Menard's mail in rebates are usually given in the form of store credit which is something to consider when looking at the rebate prices.

The first time I got a Menard's rebate, I didn't even look at it. I went to the bank and tried to cash it. I looked like an idiot but at least the bank teller said that I wasn't the first!!!

What blows my mind is that it's a postcard-so everyone knows what it is. And they don't ask for ID when you use one. So what's to stop a postal employee (or anyone else with access to the mail) from swiping it? I've had some that were close to $100 total.

I been checked for ID maybe once every 20 times, but your right they could easily be swiped. I should have noted that it was the price after the rebate, but I go their so often that it doesn't matter to me if its cash or store credit.

After looking at one up close, I think the better buy is the green $700 (regular price) 36" or 37" top/bottom combo. I don't like the top drawer/cover arrangement on the black one - maybe it's better for a pro, but not for me.

Another personal preference - I like Menards full width bottom drawers vs. the HF single full width drawer.

You don't get money but you get a "Menards Merchandise Credit Check" that is good to use in the store. When I bought my other side-box and a couple of other small items, I got a rebate slip for $36.21 which came in th email in about 4 days.

I've heard good and bad about Menards, but all in all I like them way better than Lowes or Home Floppo. I just we we had one closer than an hour away.:(

Menards also puts out a Weekly Flyer if you don't get one by e-mail. And if you don't get a rebate card at the store, all you need is the (4) digit code on the receipt to get yours. Here is the flyer and the box to get the rebate http://www.menards.com/main/home.html

today i went to menards to look at new masterforce boxes, I do like the drawers latches as it is BETTER than green boxes with junk detents!!! BUT i had to stay with my green 36" because better drawers deep as i has no use on narrow drawers(2" deep drawers) i has use a lot on 3" and 5" drawers..... also i dont like the toolbox shells as it look like fiberglass layer?

EVEN it was fall down(full loaded of tools) that other tech did accident to cause it fall down after he just move it and the detents dont hold it so it was let all drawers go... OOPS... i had to flips all detents to make it work right. the box was fall down and no damaged even slides are still good...

I took a look at this box at Menards tonight.

In my humble opinion, it isn't as stout as the green Masterforce boxes, but probably a decent box for a hobby guy. I'd compare it's quality to the current Craftsman offerings.

I looked at them yesterday not really impressed. The old green models are better. They have better door pulls and seam more sturdy.

I agree 100% with LawnDart79.
