Thy're not that strong. Hezbollah was able to detroy a few with enhanced IEDs recently in Lebanon, but then more than a couple M1s met the same fate in Iraq. :(

Tanks inherently have vulnerabilities. A proven weakness in the merkava's has been the soft-underbelly. V-shaped underside armor and the trophy active protection system are steps to correct these flaws.
Tanks also need tactical support, which is why they are accompanied by infantry troops, otherwise they can be sitting ducks in the wrong setting. There were many strategic and tactical errors which led to the destruction of 2 tanks and damage to many others in the setting that you cited.

An episode of "Cool Tools" showed the tools that the Army uses on tanks at Ft. Knox and showed some of them in use. Major league cool. It would have been even better if the host didn't scream all the time.
