I'm about to start working for a Ford dealership and a senior tech tells me when I buy tools I need to buy metric is this true?? If so what type of sae sizes would I might need?? And..

Yes. At a dealership, you're going to use almost all metric because most of your ROs are going to be cars from the last 5 years or so.

You're still going to need full SAE sets, too because older stuff does come in. Some stuff into the 2000s were mixed SAE/MM...but metric has to be your priority.

What are you going to be doing there that you don't have full sets already? Is it lube jobs? If so, you can get away with less of everything.

Yes you need metric tools. Most cars you will see have metric hardware. You need SAE too.....never know when someone will bring in a ancient pos.

What are you going to be doing???

For Fords you will need 7,8,10,11,13,15,16,18,19,21,22 mm in wrenches and sockets along with 1 1/16, 1 1/8 for EGR tubes

You will also need a complete set of Torx bits and metric hex, both 1/4 and 3/8 drive, for brakes and other things.

You will need 5/8 and 9/16 spark plug sockets, and if the shop does older ford the 13/16 plug socket too. Also you will need a 7mm 1/4 drive swivel for the COP on 4.6 and 5.4 fords.

SAE sockets on late model Fords is pretty rare other than the 2 big wrenches I noted everything is metric

I'm working on f series trucks gas and diesel models.. Being a helper I have tools trying to make it so I have the right tools on hand..

Older diesel engines will be 100% SAE (not sure about the new 6.7)... that's a carryover from their IH design.

1/4 universals are a must. Pick up a adjustable crows foot for egr tubes and a nice set of flare but wrenches

6.7 's are metric as were the 7.3's.. Don't forget the 1 5/16 inch nuts for the ball joints on trucks..Long air chisel bit for the fan assembly on the diesels too

Not sure just what you will be doing, but some makes of new cars need very large metric sockets to remove oil filters. (Which I think is ridiculous, 50s stuff, but some do.) I have no idea whether any Fords need these.

Get a set of SAE nothing huge just a simple 10 piece wrenches at least there will be a time you need to fix air lines or something besides a metric car. Also sometime do to corrosion a smaller sae size may be desirable.

I would suggest 1/4" and 5/16" sockets because a lot AM installers will use screws with this head type. You never know what you will run into(trailer brake controllers I need to remove to take apart interiors use them more often than not).

SAE allens would not hurt either because IIRC some ford dealers will do work on other makes of cars. 3/8" allen for cavalier and other chevy calipers comes to mind.

Ford driveshaft bolts up until at least the early 2000's were a 12mm 12 point head. There may be others, but this is the only 12-point fastener I've run into on my Fords.
