mesuring single phase 240v, in old shop.

I'm installing a magnetic starter for a compressor and when I go to test the lines coming in I get- L1 to common 242v, LA to common 121v, then phase to phase I get 241v. It won't energize the 240 coil with or without pressure switch. I can manually push in the coil it will run but when I let go so does the coil. There is 3 phase in the shop, if need be I will set up a mag starter for that but I still don't understand why I would get those readings. Any help please?

It could be any number of things.

You could have it wired wrong, or the overloads are tripped or wired on the wrong set of contacts.

Post some pics so we can see what you're working with.

You have a delta connected high leg system. Two legs to ground will be ~120 and the third ~240. I can come back later with a schematic if no one has helped you out by then.

I will post some pictures in about an hour. The test took place at the cut off box. When i get there I will map out the eletrical for the building. Thank you for helping me out.

No image bud. Also don't get too caught up in your voltage readings, it is what it is. So instead of drawing something up I did a quick search and whatta ya know, I found this drawing. And no, it's not mine but it's applicable to your situation. Now if your starter is wired correctly and still not operating try this. Go to the source (breaker panel) and if possible relocate your high leg to the other 120 to ground source. Most high leg panels where wired (reference to grnd) L1/120, L2/240, L3/120. Some panels had line 3 as the high leg and the high leg should be tagged orange or red in color.

So with that confusion laid out there hook your single phase connected load to L1 and L3 (my first example). Another words the two legs where you have 120 volt to ground. Something I have found on many occasions but have never figured it out nor has a engineer ever explained it to me. But having the coil wired between the high leg and other damages the coil over time. Same can be said for 480V coils. I don't understand why but have seen this more times then I can remember over the last 30 years.

I get it now. The hi leg is on 3 in stead of middle position. Then they brought out the legs for 220 they didn't check to see witch was the hi leg. Thank you very much.
