I am looking at purchasing a variable speed electric die grinder. I understand that electric and small don’t go together in the world of die grinders.

I plan to use the grinder primarily to clean up mig welds, enlarge holes etc. I only plan on using it for metal fabrication projects and not woodworking unless a rare project pops up.

I have read the reviews on the GE710 and think based on it being smaller and variable speed puts it above the low cost Dewalt and Makita offerings for my needs.

However, I am also eyeing the GE710 Compact but I am unsure if the compact model is the way to go. I am a bit concerned that without a snout to hold, it might be difficult to control.

Any first hand experience with the compact model?

Most of the time when I pick up a die grinder, I hold it like a pencil. That one wouldn't work for me. On the other hand if you normally pick up a right angle die grinder, it may be great.

I have the GR710 plus, its a excellent grinder. I use mine for similar duties and find that it is bulky, and use it only for rough work.

I think the smaller package would be nicer for my personal use, but have also found myself chucking up 2" deburring pads and working my bigger one hard.

The smaller one may be easier to control without all that leverage at the end?

Given that the go to response when it comes to electric die grinders seems to be Metabo I thought there would be more replies...

Heck I even said “Please” in the title.

I have a 710 plus in my service truck and use it for almost all of my portable work. I only fire up the gas powered air compressor when needing to get into a tight spot. I have tried two other brands of electric die grinders and will adamantly recommend Metabo.
