Metabo megathread?

I know our esteemed Jack Olsen is a Metabo addict, and Monte knows quite a bit about 'em (though he knows a lot about everything). They're one of the few large scale power tool manufacturers that still manufacture out of Germany (Festool and Fein being the others).

I guess they're known for their angle grinders, but like any other power tool company, they've branched out into a lot of things.

Post 'em up!

Love my Metabo stuff, angle grinder and buffer, I really don't think you can buy better tools. You don't see it very much, probably because it's pricey but you get what you pay for. There stuff is made to be repaired if ever needed, it's not thro away junk.

As a (previous) owner of the M18 Fuel compact gun, the tool is built with a similar idea, but the execution on the Metabo is much better. There are 12 torque settings which is a little much if you're not in a production setting, but I'll take it. Soft start trigger is nice.

Light is mediocre, it comes from the base of the tool like all Metabo drills/impacts (where the torque setting switch is).

My sister was a customer service rep for them in Toronto Ca. I begged her to give me some samples but they never showed up.

I'll play. Metabo, Ridgid Metabo, Metabo. Honestly the Ridgid is my favorite because it came with a MUCH longer cord which is far more handy than you'd think. I also do like the lighted plug w grinder emblem, smart. These were available for FAR less than a regular Metabo, supporting my biggest complaint w Metabo: they're over-priced, even for as nice as they are.

One of the Metabos is the "Q" quick spindle nut. I never really use it truthfully, I just snug and break accessories by hand.

It seems to go both ways, really.

I've been looking into their cordless stuff lately, and their angle grinder is $139 and despite being brushed, seems to be able to beat the pants off everyone in the market. Cheaper than the Milwaukee, more power, better runtime, less vibration? Sign me up.

They outsourced mfg to China on this one, which is disappointing, but so is every other angle grinder in the test except the Bosch and DeWalt (Mexico? Since when were they a hotspot for power tool mfg?)

I use metabo at work (industrial maintenance and construction) and we have the following 18V cordless tools:
- hammer drill
- impact driver
- impact wrench
- grinder
- die grinder
- recip saw
- circular saw
- rotary hammer <- amazing for tapcons or wedge bolts

We also have the following corded:
- die grinder
- 4 1/2" grinder
- rotary hammer

All of them are great tools! wish I could afford them for home

Hey Monte, where can I find one of those 400NM Metabo brush less Impact Wrench? Can't seem to find a retailer in the US.

There's only a few right now.

I bought mine at Zoro.com with a 20% off coupon, ToolBarn.com says they can get it as well. Note that Metabo's part numbers are weird, what they show on their website isn't how they're sold. All stores I've found have it listed under 602205520 for the kit 2 battery + charger kit, and 602205890 for the bare tool.

And Grainger of course since Zoro has it, but their pricing is way higher.

Hopefully Amazon and TylerTool/CPOMetabo pick it up soon since they seem to carry the rest of their stuff.

Question for a Metabo expert. We have some grinders that will not work with our portable welders and generators. I believe it is the soft starts. Anyone else have this problem?

Okay, this is probably as good a place for this question as any: I'll be getting a new 5" angle grinder down the road. I won't be changing wheels much, as I have other grinders I can leave various wheels on. I want a pretty strong motor. I won't be working on stainless at all. I like slide switches. I want 'made in Germany'. I don't need a rat tail, but wouln't particularly mind, either. Which model? I just want a basic, strong grinder

Pretty strong ? SO definately something with a VTC or VC electronic which maintains the speed under load. It seems they only offer the WE 14-125 Plus in the US with the electronic module. I personally would wait until Metabo will release their new angle grinders in the US since they now offer a larger assortment up to 1700 Watt. The new ones are also slimmer and have a improved toolless "Quick" system etc. For "pretty strong" i would choose something around 1200 Watt, for "very strong" i would choose 1400/1500 Watt and for "very very strong" 1700 Watt. :) Or maybe take a look at the Fein 12-125 or 15-125 grinders.

Huh, interesting. Looking at that review, it says China. But looking at Grainger, it says otherwise.
I hope the "right" coo is the right coo :D

I have a W8-115 (4-1/2") grinder and while it's second to none in quality of construction and smooth operation, I typically grab my Makita first just because it's lighter and more maneuverable. I do like the easy wheel guard adjustment on the Metabo.

Modified this Festool systainer insert for my Metabo gear.

I really want a Metaloc III to match (Monte, I'll trade ya for something ;) ), but Metabo isn't importing Metalocs here, though some of their tools ship with Metaloc inserts...:headscrat

Wow, funky. This is like splitting the difference between the old Metabox/classic systainer and newer Metaloc/T-Loc systainers. Single latch (instead of the four) which saves a lot of time, but doesn't have the ability to open it mid-stack like the T-Locs.

I know all the previous ones were made by Tanos (TTS, which also owns Festool) which is why you see the overlap w/ the Festool systainers, I wonder if this is still made by them.

Got some Metalocs....

IMG_20150130_025626361.jpg

Didn't know what to expect, they're definitely sturdier than the Festool T-Locs though. The T-Locs feel like they're going to break every time you bump it off something.

Yeah, made in CZ.

And yeah, they do lock together. :) You just can't open mid-stack like you can the T-Locs.

Where did you get them?

Had someone stash 'em in their luggage on a flight back. I might make a trip myself in July, I need more!

Looks like Oz Tool Talk revised their drill/driver shootout to crown the rightful winner. :)

Thanks to rice rocket and Monte for pointing me to the new Metabo brushless. It came in a discrete white box but however was not secure and bounced around during shipment. No a real issue, just first time I ever bought a powertool packaged like that.

Looks like Metabo is transitioning to the slimmer angle grinders for the USA market. The website shows the new models but the old model numbers still appear in the side bar....strange.

so digging this back up, who wants to speculate how Li-HD works, and how this is possible? This is pulled off the Metabo Facebook page, but the Germans are usually pretty good about not lying about their results. The difference in Ah doesn't suggest that it should produce near double the runtime.

The LiHD battery packs come with larger battery cells. So you have more power, higher lifetime, longer runtime and higher overload capacity. They´re the best out there right now....
