I have 3 Metabos , all 4 1/2 ''. The First one is over 35 years old and still going.
The other two are around 5 years old. A well made tool for sure. Mine are still made in Germany.
My next one will be the variable speed one for sure. They are great for wire wheels. Slower speed may help keep the wires intact.

I usually am using my grinders for welding projects, typically autobody or getting creative/repairing property management equipment.

I picked up a dewalt from lowes a week ago, works good with the flap disc. I started to think that variable speed might be nice with the flap disc. I have a 2200 rpm (really old metabo) that has been my dedicated cup brush unit.

So anyone use a flap disc with the variable speed option?

Yeah, I have a Makita SJSII variable speed 4.5" angle grinder and love the versatility with a flap disc. I use it on the lowest speed setting to resharpen shovels and other landscaping/gardening tools. It also works very well to strip a finish FAST, without taking off as much material as if it was running at full speed.
