Metal Bench Top

I'm considering building an additional HD bench for my workshop. The plan is for a 2'x6' top of double 3/4" MDF. I am considering a metal top, so I can knock around larger items (pump motors, transmissions etc) Any sugesstions on the best material and thickess for this. I don't know if 16 ga will be enough but don't want an armor plated tank either.

I'd go with 1/8". 16ga is pretty thin and bends easy for a workbench.

Stainless would be nice, but vastly more expensive than plain steel.

Galvanized would be nice if you're not welding on it. Of course, it will get scratched over time. Stainless will hold up better, but you'll probably have to settle for a piece that's much thinner.

I've got 18ga over 3/4 plywood and it's held up nice. It's only 36 x 36. I go over it with 440 grit on a palm sander and some WD40 whenever it starts to get a little rust or too much weld spatter (maybe once a year).

I want to replace it with a solid steel top, but I haven't been able to justify the cost...

12 gauge cold rolled or hot rolled P&O ( pickled and oiled) over the 1 1/2 MDF would make a nice top.

I had this one made at fab shop 30" x 8' (metal top) it has 1 1/2" of flake board under it. That was 32 years ago and it's had lots of use in a trans shop...now I have it at home.
