Metal bin drawers, restoration or scrap?

So, I really am keeping them. I want to clean them up a little though.

I have a retired dad who is bored, who also has a giant air compressor and blast cabinet - oh yea and time. So I took two over for him to try out...



They cleaned up decent. Obviously, lots of pitting, I mean character.

I slapped a little bit of gray primer on them and might end up with a charcoal or gray gloss finish - depending on which color OEM paint I end up with for free...



They're definitely pitted, but I don't think I care too much. Just want some color on them.

Looks great to me. I have some very similar ones, also got them for free. I find then extremely handy for storage. Lots, of times I'll take the whole bin of XXXXX out of the shelf and bring it over to the bench while i'm working. It's pretty conveneint.

Those look like they will come in handy. But if you have more than you can use, I bet you could sell them pretty easily.

Might be worth looking into electrolysis for rust removal (****** tank).

Spray them with satin polyurethane and sell them as antiques.

they will be very useful and between you and your dad they should have a new shine to them. the pitting wont matter a bit and if you get a hammered rustoleum paint it might not even show.

since you have a John Deere in the garage how about painting the drawers green with the bin painted yellow? or pick any color you want and even the primer looks ok.

nice score and great for nuts and bolts and all kinds of other items.

Yep.

Don't know why but I like the "primed" finish (if it's gray) on stuff. I'd just clear coat those with clear coat matte. Can't paint everything black I suppose.

Something like that is hard to find and most of the stuff made today will fall apart when opening and closing them.

If you do refurb is and need PVC liner material for it let me know. I have had lot of GJ members buy some from us and I have had nothing but amazing feedback!

Madosta, you ****. Those will look great in any shop. Wish I could score free cabinets like that. I would pay it forward and get rid of my used and abused plastic bins.

Thinking about a better primer or sealer and probably seeing if he can get a bunch done so I don't rattle can but use a gravity feed spray gun instead...
