hi, as you might have read in my intro post, i will be looking at putting up a metal building as a shop.

i have a detached 2 car garage with space on the side. the 2 car would actually work but my main reason for wanting a shop is so i can have a lift and the ceiling would not accommodate that. also, more space would be nice. after working 10 years as a mechanic i cant seem to function without a lift haha.

now, what i have in mind is a steel building. next to my 2 car i have a space that is 28'D and 32'W. the 28 is based on my current garage but i should be able to go 30' if needed. the 32 might be able to go to 42' but i have a 10x10 shed with a roof extension. the extension can go allowing me to make the new building wider but that would only leave a few feet between it and the shed.

for now i'm doing a lot of research but i'd like to get some advice from you guys. things youve done, regret, wish you could do differently, lessons you learned...
basically anything you learned along the way. last time i did a big construction project i found a bunch of things i could have done differently but but then it was too late. i've never dont a full garage/shed build so i figured i'd try to get as much advice as i can.

so far i've looked into companies that provide steel buildings but i feel like all they want is your information and money, so i've put that on hold until i can learn more and know what questions to ask.

thank you

How much do you want to do? It could be a turn key build or you could act as GC. Will there be permits involved?
Where is Elk Grove?

A sketch (foot print) would help a great deal to add to this post, Eave height would be at least 14'-0 (a guess) 12'-0 wide x 12'-0 high door and a walk door. Until we have a drawing.

thank you for replies.
im not contractor but can def work with my hands. not sure how much is envolved in putting the building up though. the concrete is something i would contract out because i don't have enough experience to get it perfectly level.
it would have permits and Elk Grove is in CA just south of Sacramento.

i'll try to get a picture of the land we're working with and a sketch of what i want tomorrow.
thanks again.

I put a 40x60 Olimpia steel building up 10 years ago I had the excavating contracted and had help pouring the concrete I poured the floor in 3 pours 20x40 each the rest I did myself had help getting the main frame up and then about 30 million screws later I had all the metal on. If I was to do it again I would have went with 14' walls instead of 12.

I put up r38 insulation it is easy to heat in the winter and stays cool in the summer here in the Catskills.

There are pictures of the build at the link.

hope this picture works. so on the left you can see the existing garage. from the edge of the red concrete its 28' back, i should be able to go 30. from left to right its 32' but if i remove the roof extension on the shed to the right then i'll gain about 10'. please let me know if you have any suggestions at all. first time doing this so want to do plenty of research.
thank you

Once you get a reputable contractor for the metal building, get quotes for both sizes you're considering. That may help you decide. If the difference in cost is small, go with the larger size. As others have mentioned, what can you do on you own? Electrical (110, 220, lights, welding machine setup), plumbing for air compressors, floor epoxy, insulation, etc. Do you have any friends that could help you with some of the work, AC & Heat? Look around your neighborhood and find something similar to what you're looking for. Stop by and ask who built their shop. Ask them to show you around, to get ideas. That's just a few things I can think of. There are folks on here that have a lot more expertise than I do, so hopefully they will chime in soon.

You may not be able to build as close to the existing buildings as you want to. You should probably visit your local planning and or building department to find out what the rules are and then plan accordingly.

great to see someone else from the area. i'm just 10 min from Mather down excelcior.
is this something that requires a GC? the concrete is something id sub out and it seems like most companies that make buildings also install or if its something that that just needs to be assembled i can do that myself. cutting/welding/fab is not that big of a deal but if its even really that much work i'll sub that out too. electrical, plumbing.... that all i can do myself for sure.
if a contractor is required do i just find a framer?
also great tip on looking around the neighborhood. i'll do that as soon as the temp drops below tripple digits haha.
