Metal Eating Cold Chisels???

My old Craftsman chisel set has seen better days.

I want a new set that eats metal like there's no tomorrow. I'm sure today's are better than the ones I bought in 1973.

I'm looking for suggestions for a "good" set. Usual disclaimer.....I can't afford SO.

Thanks in advance...you've never steered me wrong yet.

Check the cost over there, but i bought a PB Swiss set and they cut through anything like it's tin. I bought mine from Germany and they were very reasonable. (Much cheaper than Snap-on equivalent set.)

Mayhew is the OEM for Snap-on's punches and chisels, so you get the same quality for a much reduced price. I have a few of their own branded piece and they're very nice and cut very well.

You try warranting them? Sears has warrantied some punches for me in the past. Even if you do not like the current quality of Sears you can score some new ones for backups.

I have not but a good suggestion. Never hurts to try. Thanks.

You sure about that? They may have changed recently but my SO set doesn't look at all like Mayhew's chisels. I'd of course be glad to have either as both are a good quality product.

Anyone know if Western Forge is still making all of the craftsman punches and chisels? I have some older ones that do pretty well.

did you ever think about putting them on the grinder and giving them a new cutting edge....

the steel in old tools is much better than the steel in todays tools, most of which is made overseas.

^^^^^^^^

What he said! I always on the lookout for older chisels to add to the collection, butI now only buy new ones based on needs or upcoming jobs. I have found all the above excellent suggestions, but I don't need 89 dull chisels when one sharp one will do the job.

And if you really use one that much an air hammer is a wise investment.

Yeah they sure do. Thanks for the info. All the Mayhew stuff that I have seen is a different line apparently. The Mayhew stuff that I'm talking about is really close to the western forge stuff in look.

Their "standard" line is a lot more industrial/functional looking, just as good as the more finished 150 line and what they make for Snap-on though.

I have no idea how SK punches and chisels hold up. But I did try out a set (got it in the mail tuesday and haven't used it yet...). I got a 20 piece set for like $115 or something, after using the VISA discount at Advance Auto (online) which takes $50 off of an order for $150. Then I paid taxes and $10 to ship it. You can get free delivery to an Advance Auto location if you prefer.

With taxes in Indiana, they would have been $107 if I picked them up at the store. Its a nice set, though they aren't nearly as fancy as the snap on punches. I'm hoping they just hold up well. They come in a nice long tool roll too.

I ordered a 6 piece Mayhew Chisel set. I don't need the set with Punches as I have a nice Starrett set.

And per the comment about an air chisel...I do intend to get one. I'll hardly ever use it but last night I needed one bad and would have been nice to reach back into a drawer and dust one off and and make short work of a bolt head.
