You folks helped me greatly while building my garage additon. Now I need some advise re a metal fence. The d___ deer have suddenly shown up and are eating up (of all things) my rose bushes. I have about 200 rose bushes and they are real nice. At least they were real nice until the deer started eating all the leaves off of them. I have tried sprays and some electronic gizmos that shock the deer. These worked temporarily but they soon lost their effectiveness. I want to put up a 6' iron (steel) fence. I know deer can probably jump over this but in case they do I am going to put some sort of electrical shock wire of the top of it. (People always say, "just shoot the deer". The blasted things come at 2-4AM. I never see them. The cops tell me they see a herd of 12 or so. I have 2 dog kennals out there-that doesn't bother them any.Other folks say "get some human hair and put it out there" or "go to the Zoo and get some lion poop!" No thanks.)
My question is in regards to a source of fencing. I figure I can put this stuff up myself. I can weld and I have put up wooden fences and some chain link before. Any of you bought metal fencing before? I guess some fence contractors will sell the fencing?
Any help is appreciated.

Steel yards should be able to order ornamental stuff, if that's what you want.

Fence suppliers should sell pre-fab panels that you just throw up and find a way to run them together. Could make the project go a lot faster. Never priced 'em tho.

Try the welding projects forum on the Hobart board, and I bet just a search there will net lots of results:

We have some pretty dumb deer down here. That Plantskydd stuff is the stuff that I was using. It worked pretty good at first but then the d deer seemed to ignore it. I put it out as per their instructions. Has it done good for you? It is suppose to last for a long time. It doesn't cost that much. I thought perhaps of putting it out monthly although they say you don't have to do it that often. My yard is on a garden tour this next May. It is going to be pretty embarrasing if all these folks show up and see nothing but denuded rose bushes. I am getting nervous.
Thanks

Yeah, deer love roses, especially buds. My neighbours tore all theirs out after years of never seeing a flower on them.

I'm surprised the Plantskydd shows pictures of a marigold - the deer don't seem to care for those around my area!

Good luck with your fencing...I think you're right about 6' not being high enough though.

My sister has some horses and I bet the electric fence she uses will stop the deer..............Zapppppppppppp!

The electric fences are just about the only thing that works around here. They will go over, under or through anything else.

It's common to see small electric fences in yards surrounding ornamentals, fruit trees, etc.

My brother-in-law is having a huge problem with them, just trying to find something he can plant that they won't eat. Cactus, maybe?

I agree with the electric fence. That's about the only thing that I've seen work. They aren't that obtrusive, and once you get the herd convinced that you mean business, they'll leave your plants alone even if the fence is off for a while. If you leave it off indefinitely, eventually they'll figure it out.

A deer can easily jump a 6' fence.

The whole issue here really is deer over-population.

I wonder how many body shops would go out of business if it weren't for car/deer crashes. They're just big rats with hooves IHMO. A cuter form of vermin.

Yep go get a fence and set it on "high" Then use a timer to turn the thing on between 1 am and 5 . that way during the day none of the neighbors kids will get their hair straightened.

:wtf: You could always take up bow hunting and fill your freezer with veal.

Unless I missed somehing, he didn't mention problems with a herd of cattle running through the yard. Veal is the meat from a calf.

Venison is the meat from a deer.

That is correct-a herd of deer. No cows as of this date. Some of these deer are 'big boys'. My wife saw one the other night just down the street that she said looked like a 'moose'. The cops say there are two really big ones that they see regularly, at night. 20" rack spreads+. I have been in this house for 27 years and have never seen a big buck here-but they are.
