I've got close to 250 metal files, everything from round, half round, flat, knife edge, ect..

I hate the idea of them all grinding against each other :/ dulling everything in the process.

I've been searching the web for over a week including pintrest even lol

Anyone have some creative ideas that dont cost a fortune?

Thanks!

Tool rolls, lots and lots of tool rolls. That's what I store my files in. The way to do it is to lay out a piece of cloth to cover all the files and then roll it up, that way there's no chance of them banging into each other. I use an old roll from a set of Mac wrenches for my good set of files.

Thanks for the ideas guys! I've viewed those other threads posted! Wish I could cut dado's into wood lol that idea would work well stacked about 4 high! Anyone else seen something creative?

I certainly don't need all of them accessible, but a dozen I use frequently would be ideal!

I use coiled wire to hold them, it works good enough. I use it for wrenches too.

Just use a piece of wood and cut slots with a table saw to keep the files in their own holsters.

Really contemplating this idea! I just don't own woodworking tools at this time, maybe I'll see if a friend can cut something out for me!

As for the tool roll pouches, they just dont seem to be the same length per slot, or don't hold very many, the tan one from post 35 as mentioned is real nice I wonder where he got that!

Use some manilla folders to make sheaths and store them anywhere.

You could cut some slits in closed cell foam and slip the files inside.

Drill some holes in wood and tap in some short dowels for dividers. Or glue some scrap wood to the base for dividers.

In Guy Lautards book The Machinists Bedside Reader, third edition I believe, he shows how to make a file rack, multi tiered like a wedding cake. Looked pretty cool. Called it " A Stroke of Genius". Unfortunately I can't put my hand on my copy right at the moment.

I use cut-up bicycle inner tubes to store the ones I use the most. Others are stored mainly in pouches. But then again, I don't own 250 more or less.

Couple of links to get you started :

Rubber tube is what I use to store files on the go and in my tool bag/tote, works great. With multiples I give em a light coat of oil and wrap with tin foil to store in bundles held together with rubber bands or electrical tape. With my file drawer I alternate the ends every other so the file ends are between two file handles.

On Amazon, it is listed as a three book series. Are there three books under one cover or are there three separate books?

His Web Site seems to indicate there are three separate volumes (all currently unavailable).

Yes, 3 separate books. I should have said volume 3, not third edition. Apparently now that they are out of print, the price seems to have really jumped. Too bad, they're pretty interesting reading, lots of little tricks and work arounds.

I use the cardboard tubes from paper towels. Cut them in half long-ways, use some duct tape to make fitted sheaths. I use different colored tape for different file types for quick identification.

I use paper towel tubes also, works on 10" or shorter. I mash them flat and staple one end shut. Longer files get wrapped in Tyvek shipping envelopes.
