Metal for interior ceiling.

I'm going to go the metal ceiling route in our building. Something like the Dura Panel that Menards sells. On longer runs, how much overlap do I need on pieces that will run the same length. In other words if I've got to cover a 24' span, is that just 2 12' pieces butted end to end, or if not, how much overlap should I allow for?

If I had a 24' ceiling, I would get 2 12'-3" pieces instead of a full 24' piece. they will cut it whatever length you need. That way you can run your j channel around the edge and slide the panel into it instead of fighting a 24'. As an alternative, you can get some other length combo and plan to put the seam under a row of light fixtures to hide it. Anyways, you want a lap of 2-3".

I used 29 gauge metal roofing material for my garage ceiling. My garage is 28 feet deep framed with 2x6's making the interior distance 27' 1". I ordered metal sheets that were 9'2" long which provided a 2 1/2" overlap. I nailed 1x3 wood strapping approximately 3' on center onto the bottom of the ceiling joists, making sure that there was a piece exactly where the metal sheets overlapped. The 9'2" sheets fit nicely onto the bed of my pick-up truck. I predrilled all the sheets while they were stacked together in the bed of the pickup truck. I rented a drywall panel lift, one that would go up high enough to reach my 12' high ceiling. I installed the entire ceiling by myself in two days.

My building is 30X48 and I purchased 50 panels of 36"x12'4." My trusses were 48" apart and I had contacted the manufacturer about load for cellulose blown in insulation. They said the 4' span was fine.

I am not sure that answered any questions for you but it was all the facts I needed to get my ceiling installed. I had minimal scrap once finished. I purchased this from Carter Lumber and they matched the cheapest price I could find at Menards.

I guess that means I gave myself 4" of overlap on the runs and this was plenty as my trusses were on the money. You probably want your overlap to run away from the entrance as it is visible when you look up facing the ends. I hope this makes sense.
