Brand new guy here from north Texas. Spent a few hours yesterday searching the site. A lot of great info/ideas.

My wife and I just had a house built and I had a 20x20 slab poured for a metal building/spare garage (if I had it to do over again I would've made it 24x30, but we have very little money left) with a 1.5" 'notch' all the way around and 16' opening at the front for a garage door.

I have gotten 3 bids for a metal building. The first two were about the same - $9,500. The 3rd one though is quite a bit cheaper - $5,500.

The attached picture is one of the layouts one of the first bidders sent me ($9,500) and I photoshopped in there of the colors, the house, and the slab we have just to get an idea.

I feel real good about the quality of work the first bidder gave me as he has a lot of refrences and I have already seen a building he recenty put up. But $9,500 sure seems like a lot and we already gave the slab! It's pretty much just a metal building. Unless the $5,500 bidders building just look like wrecks, I don't see how I could not go with him.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Didnt think that picture would be that small, he is what is written up top:

Truss Diagonals 2" x 2" x .083 T.

Wall Columns 4" x 4" x .120 T.S.

Wall Sheeting 26 ga. Colored R P

May or may not be a good rate in your area. Get more bids... The reason people get ripped off by contractors is because they get greedy. If it's too good to be true, well then...

Since you're in N. Texas, I suggest looking across the Red River to J&I in Madill. They sell metal building kits at pretty good prices. Their 20x20 is currently just under $2800. They can help arrange delivery, and then you just get someone to weld it up for you.

Thanks for that info on J&I, but their 20x20 kit has just a 10' door and I want a 16' door. I'll contact them see what they could do for me.

We got another bid that we should hear something back on today. But I just talked to the contractor on the $5,500 bid and I feel pretty good about him he is going to give me some locations of the work he has done so I can check them out. The $9,500 bid gave me a CAD of what he is going to do and the $5,500 is going to use the same materials.

We are about a few miles north of Aledo, TX.
