I have seen stainless and aluminum diamond plate used before in stores.

you may want to think about some industrial rubber corners

Personally, I'd avoid using a sheet metal column wrap in a garage. You will hit it with something at some point and will be left with a dented column wrap. If you're determined to use metal, I'd go with something like aluminum diamond plate sheets and then a matching angle on the corners all attached with countersunk screws.

If there's a chance that you'll be hitting the column(s) with car doors accidentally (of course), think about using something soft. I've seen heavy rope used in a nautical-themed basement of a beach house before. Looked good and was a lot safer for little kids running around.
