Hello everyone. Dont freak out over the title. What i am wanting to do is build a 15x25 paint booth out of sheet steel and use the halide light on the ceiling.
Now what i want to do is cut 4 holes a couple inches wider then the reflectors on the housing of the light in the ceiling. Then take some 1/2 inch glass and cover the hole from the outside then set the halide light on top of the glass from the outside. This way it will keep it out of any fumes and from harms way. I am just curious if this will be to much light. Running 1 each about 4ft off each corner maybe 4 ft of the side ( the 15 wide side ) and the other about 6 ft from the end ( the 25 ft side ). i already have a lot of the glass. Already have the light. 400 watt lamps. Using 12 gauge sheet metal on walls. Walls only have to be rated for a specific burn time inside and it is like a min of 16 gauge but i already have the metal. explosion proof exhaust fan. down draft booth with intake and exhaust filter. Will actually flow about 600 cfm more than osha requires across the painters face.

only cost i will have in the booth is screws, wiring, floor coating and wood or metal to build the framing of the booth.

Should work, but keeping that glass clean may be a PITA! But you leave out the important factor: how high will the ceiling be? You'll need low-bay fixtures.

They will be 9 ft. I run these in my shop that have the bottom of the light is 13 ft from floor but I run them without reflectors.

Sure it could work, but I think the color is going to be weird.

I like 5000k color T8 bulbs for the best color reproduction.

Metal Halide puts out ALOT of heat-you're going to need some high temp glass and v ent the reflectors to let some air flow. As far as trueness of color, there are high color rendition lamps available, but they don't come cheap. There's a reason high end booths still use flourescent....

You think that I could use 12 t8 4ft 4 bulbs and it be enough for a 25x15? White walls white ceiling. I have those to that are new would just need bulbs.

One the T8 fixtures for the paint booth don't the fixtures also use glass for the light bulb covers? Would it be the same PITA for the over spray on the bulb?

Also why would I need to vent the halide lights. They are not vented now bc they have the sealed white diffuser on them?

I don't think the glass laying there will make it vapor proof unless you do some high heat silicone. Laying a metal halide on the glass like that will make it extremely hot like you would burn your hand if you touched the glass

It wouldn't even have to be glass it could just be the diffuser and only let the bottom through. Yes i know it wouldn't be the correct color but we have 2 booths and primer and sanding booth and a paint and clear booth. The paint and clear booth has 5000k t8 fixtures.

Automotive. And yes i know that the color rendering will be wrong but the halids are not the main source of light.
