Metal Lathe needs a home

This isn't my deal at all.

I get a lot of off-the-wall questions on my Junkyard Tools website. The most recent question is a guy whose father died and they have a metal lathe that needs a "good home or tool museum for it if there is one."

Sounds to me like it might be a good deal for someone here. The guy says it has "(B/1 6/5) on the tag." And his area code is 417 (Southwestern Missouri). PORTER CABLE LATHE IS IN NE OHIO. And that's all I know.

I didn't notice it before, but in the subject title of the original email, it says "old Porter Cable fullsize metal lathe". I didn't know PC ever made one. Currently two guys are looking into this. I'll try and keep everyone up to date, if possible.

All; evidently the lathe is in Ohio in his dad's basement. I bet it weighs a ton, literally. So Shawn dropped out and I bet the other drops out as well because he is in Missouri.

So it should be still up for grabs, and probably a bargain if not free. Porter Cable lathes are rare.

I am the other guy Steve forwarded information to the seller for. I have asked the seller to provide me with a zip-code or city name to figure out where exactly it's located. I'll post up the info here when I get it. I doubt I will be able to arrange to pickup that far away. Once the seller gets back to me and I'm definitely in or out I'll post it here. I'm guessing someone more local is a better candidate.
Here is a quote from the sellers email to me:

"I’m guessing the lathe is about 48” working area. the whole machine about 6ft or so. It was working , I know it has a broken key that holds it in gear. It is located in NE Ohio. it is in the basement and will have to be taken apart to get it out."

lol here's another but ill ask here so it may break the cycle of off the wall ones on the site..lol
Anyhow, if you come across any Power hacksaw blades that are still usable, id be interested... esp if they are 12"!! bout bigger will work too. Id preffer anything over 3/4" wide (tall?) because and down flex too much and cause a crooked cut. Dont know if 1" is better or not but ill try em, 11/4" is best. thanks!

Distance puts me out. I hope somebody on here can at least inspect what looks to be a complete and rare lathe with good functionality.

if it is one I have seen a picture of elsewhere it is 3 phase as well.
I could get it but the cost would have to be less than scrap value to make it worth my wile.

my BFF disassembled a south bend 9" and put it in a Honda civic. I am sure I could take it apart but my physical condition would require some extra muscle to get it out of the basement.

While I think this would be "get it gone" with maybe a little cash added I never got to the point of discussing price, sorry. The contact person, through KC-Steve, is a family member of the owner, who passed away, and is arranging the sale/removal on behalf of the rest of the family, if I followed everything correctly.
The person who responded to my contact was very easy to communicate with so if you're interested and able to get to Alliance OH drop them a line through KC-Steve. FWIW, if you need help loading it out you might ask if they could help but I had no discussion regarding this.

No problem, glad to help. I'm guessing but I think it would be a bargain if not free just to get it out. They will have to pay a lot of money if they can't. (wink)

I would think someone would have a great time renovating it and using such a rare old lathe. I received a PM from someone that offers their help in moving it that lives nearby.

Or just for laughs, offer it up for bids on Uship. Let some shipper try and get it out of the basement and bring it to ya. It might get on TV (Shipping Wars).

The last email bounced back "undelivered." So the guy probably dropped his email address and didn't bother to tell me. It wasn't a free email address, implying it was a legit offer. It's possible he got pissed. I only sent him 4 people's info, PRIVATELY.

MOjoWales received an email from the seller recently so the question about whether this offer is closed or not came up. I tried again to send an email and it went through, the guy answered this morning. He said he wasn't sure why it bounced but said to send him more interested parties. I'm guessing his email service is unreliable.

So I forwarded Tim and Don's info this morning.

Regarding price Mojo says he is highly negotiable on price.

The best way to ask questions or express interest is to have your message forwarded through KC-Steve to the families contact person because you will need to talk to them on the phone at some point, they're not members here and not monitoring this thread as far as I know. This has led to the back and forth confusion on this sale but I think the sellers are legitimate and will be reasonable to get this gone, IMO.
For those of you closer and wondering about removal, my last message from the seller suggests there could be help loading, both people and a tractor, to get out of the basement.
If I was closer I would have picked this, and any other tools possibly needing a new home, up. I hope someone close by arranges to see this and reports back whether they purchase or not.
