Metal on walls...

Just finished drywalling the garage. Now I want to add a 4' metal surround around the bottom of the walls. I know diamond plate would look great, but is very pricey. Also considering a metal roofing material.

Any other thoughts... pics would be great!

Good idea for an area were you might weld or grind but to much $$$ for the whole place, might want to consider NICE quality 1/2" plywood w/ navy grey paint????

you could use stainless (I love stainless)
they also make it in patterns. they have some with a diamond pattern and they have them with an embossing that looks like diamond plate or other non-skid patterns

Do some checking on the metal roofing material, like the stuff OneNut used. You may want to wait 6 months or so before commiting. 6-8 months ago this material was running about $50-55 for 100sq/ft. Over the summer it jumped up to about $85/sq. I see in teh last Menards ad it was down a bit to approx. $80/sq.
Steel prices have dropped a bunch, if they continue you'll be well served to wait a few months and watch the price.

I opted to go with roofing metal I picked up enough to do this bay which is 20x30 and another 20x20 bay for $13 a sheet on craigslist.

This guy has .024" cosmetic diamond plate sheets. 4x8' sheets run about $3.40/sqft.
Comes in colors too!!

If you goto a place that sells plexiglass, they typically supply aluminum skinned plywood, thin aluminum on both sides, and i think you can order it one side only. They use them for making commercial signage, 1/2" thick plus aluminum thickness. Then if you want the diamond plate look, the same store should be able to order you rolls of diamond plate pattern vinyl you can roll over it for the look of diamond plate aluminum but at a fraction of the cost.

I bought this aluminum skinned plywood to build the bathroom stall inside my race trailer and will be buying a few more sheets to do built in cabinets in there as well...so if you've ever been inside a enclosed car trailer with cabinets...it's the same material those cabinets are made out of.

Menards also sells a plastic diamond plate material that you glue to the wall like FRP board, looks nice and i almost bought it to line the lower part of my trailer walls but opted for carpet instead for door padding.

I priced the galvanized corrugated steel roofing for the ceilings of the shop I'm building (http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10218) today. I'll be using the 30 gauge steel and it costs $1.38 a lineal foot which is the same price I was quoted six months ago. Each panel is 26" wide and you overlap one corrugation so you have 24" of coverage. That works out to .68 a square foot.

I really like that complete garage setup w/ the tin roofing stuff on the lower part of the walls.

I decided to put up a chair railing and use self-stick vinyl tile to do mine. The self-stick only lasted a few days because I put up a fresh coat of Baer ultra pure white in egshell. Ended up using some spray adhesive to re-do it and get the tiles to stay up.

I know it's not metal, but it's a cheap and easy way to give your garage a distinctive look.

I don't know what it's called but you can purchase it at Homedepot or Lowes. It's a piece of wood trim flat on one side and scalloped on the other. (See sketch below) I then attached the trim to the bottom of the wall scallop side out then nailed my corrugated tin to it then sandwiched the the tin with another piece scalloped trim so that the corrugated tin is sandwiched between the two pieces of trim. As far as the top, I just used a piece of decorative "L" shaped trim to capture the tin. Hope this helps.

Thanks again for the help! I finally finished most of the garage for now. It is painted with Sherwin Williams "Red Bay" up top. The bottom is covered with galvanized steel hung horizontally and bordered with black 1x4's.

2x12' galvanized steel roofing/siding sold at Lowes for $28 sheet. My 3car garage was about $250-300 for the metal.

A basic circular saw with a metal cutting blade sliced through the metal with no issues. Clamping a straight edge to guide the saw was very helpful!

Another fairly cheap fireproof thing to hang on the wall like where you're going to do welding is 1/4" tile backer board, like Dura Rock. It comes in something around 3x5 sheets, and it's pretty strong and waterproof too. I prop up large scraps of it around stuff when I weld outside. I cut some steel plate with a plasma cutter over it once, and where I got right up against the DuraRock with the blast from the plasma cutter, it melted the Dura Rock and it looked like black glass where it melted -- sort of like obsidian. It only melted about half way through though, so it's pretty good as a fire resistant material.

Too bad ya don't live near me, Detroit we have a scrap yard here that sells old garage doors by weight, cheap and he has a lot of the same styles. So now that you guys have planted the seed I think I'll have to do mine! Thanks for making me spend more money! LOL! I'll probly be able to do mine for like a hundred bucks or so.

I put aluminum checker plate on my walls 4' up from the floor all the way around my 36X40 shop. A buddy works at an aluminum rolling plant and you wouldn't believe me what I paid for it but I should be behind bars as I pretty much stole it! LOL!
