Metal protectant during fabrication

I have spent hours looking for a thread where one of the members showed some of the custom cars he had fabricated. They were beyond the scope of normal fabrication, he is a truly gifted fabricator. In the thread he mentioned what he used to protect bare metal during the fabrication process. I live in the southeast and with all the humidity bare steel will surface rust while you are working on it. Does anyone know the member or what thread it was?

yeah for short time periods (weeks or a few months, not years) gibbs seems to do ok. you CAN weld through it (I've done this), and they claim you can paint over it, but I'm not really sure I would trust the painting part of that, I would still want to get the metal very clean before painting.

I kind of depends. Weld-through-primer is good, but you have to clean the surface first.

I try to clean the area up, do the metalwork, clean it up again and then hit it with the epoxy primer I plan to use on final painting. Even if you end up grinding some of it back off revising something I always felt better with the only thing on the metal being part of the system that would make up the final finish. I also used eastwood rust encapsulator rattle can sometimes. Definitely not a pro, just my 2 cents

At the end of the day, oil is oil and will present paint adhesion issues if not totally removed. I'd suggest using Bull Dog adhesion promoter. It provides protection against surface rust and is designed to use with paint products, so no compatibility issues. Here's a comparison test done by Cody Walls in Delaware, he has about 8 to 10 bare project vehicles in his shop at any given time, and swears by the stuff..
