Has anyone out in the Garage Journal world taken one of the hands on metal shaping classes offered in the USA? Two that come to mind are Lazze and Fournier. I would like to hear the good and not so good of your experiences with these or any other classes you all might recommend.

i've had the Fay Butler class sitting in the "one of these days, im going to..." section of my brains list of things for a few years now. it's only like an hr and a half away from me, so its not like I even have any good excuses, other than being negligent and an inattentive student :dunno:

RIP Ron Fournier

I had the privilege of taking a one-week metal shaping class with Ron.

He was as skilled as he was humble, a true inspiration.
Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Found a video tribute that Ron Covell posted for Ron Fornier.

I have taken a few of Pat Brubaker's classes. His shop is in Hastings,Nebraska, but he travels around the county giving classes at different metalmeets as well. Great teacher and metalshaper.

I've been to these classes, Fay Butler (3 day), Lazzes 2(5 day), Peter Tommasini (5 day) and 4 or 5 Ron Covell classes. The first question I would ask is what do you want to learn and what tools do you have?

If you don't have a power hammer (Yoder/Pettingell) then you might not get as much out of Fay's class. If you have just basic tools, hammers dollies, shot bag and a stump, then a Peter Tommasini class would be a good start. Peter has some good DVDs out that are very instructive. He has some good stuff on YouTube as does Lazze.

I have a Little Giant power hammer, brake, shear, shrinker stretcher, english wheel, multiple welders. I 'm thinking of getting a pneumatic planisher as well.I would like to start making some aluminum panels/fenders for a modded '50 chevy pickup truck I have. I have done very rudimentary steel shaping but would like to do aluminum well enough that it doesn't need filler.

I've always wanted to take a class with Fay but have never gotten around to it. Another guy close to us who's really good is Wray Schelin -- he's really talented and a fantastic person. Also has an incredible shop. Impossible not to learn a lot from him.

I've taken classes with Fay Butler, Scott Knight and Ron Covell. I can recommend all of them. I don't know if Scott still does classes though.

Of those, only Fay's were hands-on. Even though he uses a power hammer (well, all power tools), Fay will teach you about how to shape metal and how to make a pattern to guide the work. The same principles apply whether you're going to use hand tools or power tools, although there are certainly technique differences.

Ron is an excellent teacher, and even an experienced guy would get something out of Ron's classes. I've been lucky enough to attend most of his workshop topics and I learn something new at every one. I'd like to attend another one sometime.

I haven't taken Laze's classes, but I'd really like to. It's on my list.
