My advice. Don’t. They are flimsy. The end/legs are the weak point. I have two in my scrap metal pile. One got bumped and folded collapsing.

Home Depot has some Husky that are similar to those by Whalen, sams club and costco. They are longer but are more stable.

I can’t tell from the picture how well that one is put together, but I have two different quality units in my garage now from HD. The better one might be a Husky or a Gladiator, I don’t recall, but the weakest part of the other one is where the vertical rails come together. The metal is not that strong and the joint is not a good one, resulting in a bit of wobble. I recently bought two of ones on casters that look like baker’s racks and I ordered them from HD. None of the ones I have are really heavy duty but this is for my attached garage and storage in it.

I've got a pair of gray ones from HD that came with particle board shelves. They're quite sturdy. Might be an early, stronger version, mine were priced around $65 10ish years back. I replaced the particle board with 2x6, using just three shelves. Had lava rock and water filled grow beds in cement mixing pans on the top two shelves, and a 26 gallon fish tank on the bottom shelf. The grow beds cycled several times a day from water filled to empty. Never had any concerns with stability.

Just checked and mine are quite different. The shelves are angle with the wood shelves just drop in place. There's also thin gauge flat stock providing angle bracing on the ends and back.

OP:

I had some of those in a house I rented. They were weak until I screwed them to the wall. Really stable then.

In my garage (new house) I put the Whalen from Costco and they are MUCH better even not bolted to the wall. The ones consti2tion posted above are a great deal! I'd jump on that price if I needed more shelving.

I have several and if you don't mind "customizing" them (screw to wall, add splice to joints, replace thin OSB shelf), etc you might be happy. No way they will hold 1,000 pounds per shelf - perhaps a couple hundred AFTER you customize.

Any thoughts on the Gladiator line?

I've got 2 garages full of it including the 48" rack and the 72" rack... I'm very happy with their stuff. Watch Facebook classifieds as they come up used for way under retail all the time. That's how I've bought the majority of my gladiator stuff that way!

I have 1 of those pallet racks and 2 still in boxes. They are super sturdy and can hold alot of weight.

Metal shelves of all kinds are very common on the surplus sites.

Depends what you want to do w/ them. I have similar from Lowes and as mentioned above the joint for the columns is the weak spot. They do that so they can fit all the pieces in the 3 ft box but still sell it as a 6 ft tall shelf. If you can screw to the wall that makes them much more rigid. If you would be getting things off and back on them every day I wouldn't want them. If the stuff isn't too heavy and will sit on them months at a time they will work. Otherwise I'd upgrade to the Gladiator.

This.
Many times better when screwed to the wall. Not going to go anywhere then.
