When I had my shop built in 2003, I probably should have shopped around more for a builder. The insulation in the shop was probably R2, if that, in value. It was nearly as hot as if I had left the walls and ceiling bare steel. The walls are essentially bubble-wrap with an inner "lining" that will peel over time. This was also used on the inside of the roof. After a severe wind and hail storm in May 2013, the roof insulation began to fall from the ceiling in sections, where it was pressed in between the angle and the metal panels. So, about half of the ceiling "insulation" lay hanging from the rafters, and a few pieces lay on the shop floor. The skylight running down the length of the peak was also loosened in four places, and one section blew completely off. The shop has survived several major windstorms and hail events (>70 kts and golfball-sized hail), but after that particular storm, (winds >85 kts and tennis-ball sized hail!), things just went to hell. The roof leaked in several places, big dents were evident all over the roof, and the shop was littered with this cheap, bubble-wrap insulation material.
A month later, I claimed the damage on the shop and house roofs on the insurance. Thankfully, I found a local roofer that did a terrific job on the shop roof AND put in new roof insulation that is both effective and durable. The pictures show both the existing insulation material on the walls, and the new insulation on the roof. The roof was completely replaced. The shop is so much more comfortable these days, just because of the more effective roof insulation! In Winter, I can work in my unheated shop comfortably down to about 25*F. Summertime is nice, as before, the shop was just too hot from mid-June to mid-September. Now? With just two 42" mobile shop fans, I can work comfortably most all day, nearly any day of the Summer months.
