It's a fairly quick process. The smallest size shapes they spun for me only take a few minutes each. The largest size which he is spinning in these photos, maybe 5-10 minutes each.

Ive been wanting to try some metal spinning myself and have been thinking about trying to fab up some kind of machine to do it. Could do it on my metal lathe but I don't think the bearings would like it. Anyone make their own rig?

Interesting project. Would be cool to have light shine threw the blue acrylic at night, might have a cool effect.

Anyway, well done.

Actually wood lathes make better spinning lathes. Penn State Industries sells a small selection of tools and how to videos for doing metal spinning on a wood lathe.

Thanks! At night the parking garage is brightly lit inside, so the pieces are kind of illuminated when viewed from outside at night. The only problem is the sculpture is so high up, you have to be at the right angle to see this. The view from inside the garage during the day is also kind of nice.

my last job we use to load large round 3/16 and 1/4" plate and spin them to make the head of cement mixers, was cool to watch.

Do you know what the price tag on this architectural art worked out to be ?
How long did this project take fro start to finish.
Looks like a fun project.

This was a $145,000.00 commisssion. I always feel slightly uncomfortable discussing $$$ but the project has been written about a few times so the amount of the commission is public knowledge.

In the initial contract for this commission, it was to be completed in one year which would have been no problem on my part, however the project was held up in bureaucracy and a legal tussle between a private developer and the municipality that commissioned the piece. It took nearly 4 years from the time the commission was awarded until when it was installed.

It was a fun project with the exception of the delays, paperwork and bureaucracy. I enjoy the creative side of art and design, not so much the business side.

Agreed. It is an interesting piece, and i bet it was fun to work on, but yes, the bureaucracy is enough to drive you insane.

This may be an old thread, but I'm glad I found it through a search. In the process of building the condenser for a stripping still at the rum factory. The stainless sheet has been rolled and welded along the length, but I need to cap the ends to form the top and bottom. I think they should be domed or rounded over at the outer edge, which would make it easy to do a lap weld around the circumference at the bottom of the column. The top cap will need to be removable for cleaning, so attachment to the column can be done with screws. I sent an email to the company linked and hope to hear from them soon.
The rum tasting session will be coming up soon!

Interesting, I live in KCMO and did not know this place exists... I learned how to spin stuff in High School metal shop. Every day at work I can't believe how little the younger generations know how to do, Things I learned in Middle school/Junior high school they are completely clueless about, Spinning metal, Heat Treatment, Forging metal, Welding, Machine work, things I learned as a pre-teen and teenager kids today will never know.
My dad taught me many things about fabrication and building things, working on my own stuff, repairing about anything. I am constantly unimpressed about youth today.

Years back, we used to do spinnings in our shop. My mentor tried to get me to do it. There is definitely an art to it for sure. We used to make lighting reflectors. and some lighting housing for large aircraft (Boeings, Embraer, Lockheed) It's not a clean job either. If you don't wear an apron or some old clothes, you will the next day after doing a few.

So how many spinnings of the same size until it really started getting to the point of really boring? :lol:

I just found out about spinning and jumped on here to see if anyone had experience with it. Going to have to get a lathe now.
