I have to go to the scrap yard to get some metal for my new coal forge. While I'm at it I want to get some type of tube stock for my steeevo bench.

What is the preferred type? Square stock? What size? I've never built something like this so I'm not sure what is standard when it comes to tube style stock.

Thanks

I used 1"x2" 14ga steel tubing for mine and it worked out fine. I needed to build the bench as low as possible and 2"x2" wouldn't have worked as well.

A good starting place to see what stock sizes and thickness are available - and get a rough idea on costs - is metalsdepot.com. Note that steel tubing comes in 24 ft. lengths, commonly called a "full stick". It is cheapest (per foot) to get a full stick.

If I were building a bench similar to picture #1, I'd use bed rails welded back to back as in the bottom of picture #2....that was my solution, using junk on hand.
