Needed to get my metal off the ground of the shop, so I built this storage rack. Unfortunately I didn’t take as many pictures as I should have during the building process. Measures a little over 10’ tall. I used 3x7.5# I-beams for both the uprights and the arms. 2” square tubing lagged to columns in the wall, with pads welded to these, to which the uprights are bolted to. Before I welded on the arms, I bolted the uprights in place, marked each upright so they’d be put back in the same position, used a laser level to make a reference mark for the first arm, then measured from that mark for the rest of the arms. This allowed for floor variation, and as a result all the arms are at exactly the same height.

Looks like it came out well! Should be plenty strong. That's a lot or space for metal, what kind of work do you do?

Shop is just for hobby work right now, getting it ready for hopefully some type of side business. At least that’s how I’ve justified it to the wife.

The fab skills are excelent. There is something to consider that the view changes after you move in the place and its easy for a guy to have a vision of a bunch of new stock but longs turn to shorts in a hurry and a guy really needs to resist the temptation to order every size he ever seen. 20 yrs from now will have a few of those on the rack and have used dozens of others. I see it at every sale. Seen it with most shops guys move in to or it has some type of creep.
I would get some big wire baskets that sit on the floor where I could toss drops. Most new jobs I do today really the steel doesnt stay 20 for long. Never hits the rack.

That’s what this one is for 😏. It’s since been painted.

Really nice job! Be sure to post a pic when it is all loaded up.
