What sizes do these metal storage trays come in? I've seen 18" but do they come in larger (say 20")? (BTW, what exactly are these called?)

Any reason a setup like this wouldn't work for tool storage, as an alternative to a tool chest?

The gray metal ones ones are made by Durham, and come in 2 sizes. You can get about 12 different setups on Amazon.

They are not very rigid, the latch is sketchy and IMO don't make for great tool storage.

If you want real storage pick up a used Vidmar or lista cabinet. Each drawer is approx. 26x26", they can be divided any which way or you can buy bins for them; you can have 20 -144 bins per drawer. When I need to find something, I can go through 10 drawers of a 59" 12 drawer unit in under a minute, more like 30-45 seconds. Personal I think it is insane to have trays as the OP shows which you have to pull out and open a lid to see what you have, no less they hold half of what a Vidmar or Lista drawer will hold.

Those Durham storage bin things are incredibly expensive per cubic inch of tool storage compared to a conventional toolbox.

Their level of quality is extraordinary in today's world.

I have two of their plastic bins; they are fantastic. Very robust and hefty.

Having used those those bins alot, I'd say they would be terrible as a "toolbox". They are great for small hardware where you may want to occasionally pull the whole tray and take it over to the job.

You pretty much have to pull them all the way out, then flip the lid open to access the contents. You then have to flip the lid back down (or push hard enough on the drawer to get the lid to flip shut ) to close them up. This would be very tedious and annoying for tools that you are accessing frequently.

At home I have a Lista cabinet but I still use a few of these trays for small items. ( wire nuts, machine screws #12 and smaller )
