Metal table oil fluid drain catch?

Huge fan of these forums, browsing every day lately.

How would you setup an existing metal work table bench to catch and drain fluid from transmission rebuilds and other oily messes?
I figured I would slope the table either back or to the side, mount metal rain gutter under the edge, slope the gutter and place a bucket or bulkhead hose or some kind of funnel collection so all the fluid would gravity drain.
I have two tables 72" x 30" each, and do transmission work often on them.
Can't find pictures of this on the web.
Thank you in advance!

I've never done this myself, but that sounds like a good plan. I think I wuold rather have it drain towards the back to recude the amount run going across your table.

I would have a metal shop cut new tops for your tables out of sheet metal, complete with a gutter up front. They can brake the bends in the full length easier than you can and it will be a seamless surface. Weld up a patch on each end of the gutter and drill a drain hole. Ideally you could weld a bung and add a barb ****** to hook a drain hose to it leading to a bucket under your table.

Add a screen on top if you want. Don't worry about the angle of the table top. You can just use a squeegee to scoop the liquid to the gutter readily. If you're really concerned, use adjustable legs on the bench or slip a shim under the back legs. It won't take much.

It's a pretty neat thing to do. You might even consider doing this to a cart instead so you have full access to all sides of the transmission work area.

When I worked at the dealer our trans techs had metal tear down benches that had holes in the middle of the bench and a lip on the sides and back.
under the table was a slide out catch pan. Trans are drained before putting on the bench so they only catch whats left when tearing down

Looks like a nice one for the price.

I did some tables for a friend by welding angle iron along two sides to form a V trough, then shimming the legs to provide a slight slope of the top.

I took a automatic transmission class many years ago the tables were set up just like this. Seemed to work well.

If you have an existing bench I would slant it to the side, as you suggested.
A chunk of rain gutter with a downspout hole leading to a 5 gal pail with a funnel will catch a lot of rebuild fluid.

An autopsy table from a hospital makes a great ****** teardown table. It has a drain for the oil to go into a bucket.

These are all great, thanks guys. Decided I'm going to keep it simple with rain gutters on the back line, table tilted ever so slightly. Thinking easiest to flush mount a drain ****** under the end of each gutter (via epoxy putty), then hose to an empty oil or ATF jug. Then when near full, swap, lid on, dump at auto parts store.
These other solutions are generally smaller and are $300 more each than what I expect to spend.
Will post pics when done. Couple weeks.
