I've recently joined to connect with others specifically about Meteor Manufacturing tools made in Buffalo, NY. The main reason being, I own the original factory where Meteor Mfg started and have been uncovering their unique history and trying to find even more.

Here are some photos of what I've been able to collect so far, with some duplicates in the mix. Looking forward to chatting with you all!

Welcome to Garage Journal! Don pointed out the thread where most of the Meteor products have been discussed. I have several ignition wrenches.

I own the original factory where Meteor Mfg started...
Do you mean 1441 Main St.?

Old Meteor Building.jpg

If you follow the link provided to the old thread above, or look up Meteor Mfg in the A-Z US Mfgrs list maintained here on GJ, that's the address we have on record for it. If you're referring to a different building/address, please let us know.

Pretty cool of you to take an interest in the building's history. What are you doing with it or planning to do with it? Google says its currently the office of a business consulting firm and this article in Buffalo Rising from just a few weeks ago on the continuing resurgence of what they call 'Midtown Main Street' says the property across the street (formerly Diamond Moving and Storage, 1440 Main St) is being developed. Looks like a neat area with mixed residential, commercial and that new-ish looking school campus.

I am also curious what you're planning to do with the tools. Personal display? Or maybe a little curio cabinet in the lobby?

Tagging former Buffalo resident and fellow collector @3baygarage. In the past he has proudly sleuthed out some old Buffalo tool OEM locations for us and posted cool photos. I know he will be interested in seeing this.

Lol! I could tell you a WHOLE LOT about that educational institution pinned in the upper left hand corner of the map. The current location of the school is the corner of Masten and E. Ferry, and also happens to be the former Buffalo Traditional school. I was in that building once, for my best friend's high school graduation!

Pretty cool, 3bay! Still comes up as Buffalo Traditional on older maps. So you were a few blocks away from Meteor Mfg and didn't even know it. Long before you were collecting old tools, of course.

Oohhh, now we can box up all our stray Meteor tools, and get them displayed in the lobby. Nice throw back idea, whoever posted that, Lugz.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I'll respond to each of your comments thus far below with tagging instead of quote replies so I don't clog things up in the thread.

@d42jeep - That thread as one of my first stops when I started the research and finding the Kirchner's Korner link where the guy's grandfather was one of the two founders was amazing. Unfortunately the link doesn't work anymore and I'm trying to track him down, which is proving very challenging. He had an incredible photo of the owners at an exhibit, which thankfully I saved before the website blipped out. I believe his grandfather was William McBride and not the other founder, William Selikoff.

@Gutman and @Private Lugnutz the original factory is located just behind 1441 Main Street at 26 Glenwood. It's a freestanding one story building, but did have some historic association with the Main Street property. They were built less than a year apart by the same developer and designed by the same architect. 1441 Main Street did contain a small retail storefront for Meteor Manufacturing, but it was not production space.

That planned redevelopment of the old storage building across the street is pretty exciting. Middle Main Street has languished compared to more concentrated redevelopment and new development at either end. Once known as Automobile Row and lined with dealerships from downtown to the city edge, there were support businesses to the automotive industry along Main and some of the adjacent side streets like where the former factory is located. In fact, the first tenant in 1923 when it was completed was a Cadillac & Lincoln repair shop.

In addition to that building, the former Flextime building a few doors up on the same side was bought by the guy who owns Fitz Waffles and Books downtown. His mother owns a wholesale flower business near his place too and I'm guessing based on the size of this new building (two big warehouses on one parcel), they may be moving both of their businesses up this way, which would really start breathing some life into this section.

As far as the tools go, they'll be heading to a vintage display case that will have a place of prominence in the small office space that will be built out in the interior.

I'm always seeing new versions of tools that I hadn't seen before, like that set of three pliers, which I had to snap up. I'm hoping to track down the guy who posted this back in 2012 and see if I can buy this Meteor Wrench off him, see here. Until seeing his post, I had no idea there was a different design they had so I'm thinking this one would have been the first iteration before the ones we're all used to seeing.

I was really hopeful, but not holding my breath, that I would find some remnant of Meteor Mfg in the building. Shockingly, when I was removing a built up platform near the entry and sweeping up the debris, a single Meteor wrench appeared! That will have a special place of honor in the cabinet for sure.

I have a LOT more history on the building itself and Meteor Mfg from all the research I've been doing if you guys are interested in hearing more.

What are you doing with it? Manufacturing? Office? Retail?

And a business address, apparently. That's the address they advertised in trade mags.

The building has been neglected since at least 1979 so there's been a lot done already with a new roof, emergency masonry repairs where sections where on the verge of collapse, etc. The original steel windows will all be kept and restored as well to keep it as close to original as possible. It'll have some kind of income producing storage component is the goal, which should help float the costs of being in the space to play around with old cars.

Here's a photo of 1441 Main some time in the early to mid 1950s where you can see the Meteor Mfg storefront to the left. It makes sense they were advertise their retail space over the factory for getting in orders, correspondence, etc. I'm sure it was convenient for them to go between both buildings

This little beauty was posted by BUS on Papawswrench back in 2012 it it was foing up for auction. I've seen a ton of Meteor ratchets but never ran across this anti-sparking version. The common little ratchet seems rather light duty. I've seen many jammed up over the years.

Borrowed photos, but at least we have them!

Definitely  worthy. I'd love to find one.

Way cool with the little driver on the end. Anybody here own this?

@3baygarage I've been trying in vain to get an account activation email on that same website where the user who posted about that wrench in 2012 is seemingly the owner. I've tried several times with different emails and the activation one never cones through so I can't even see if the user is still active. I'd love to have that one in the collection, it's the only one I've seen thus far

I'm not sure what's going on with that site currently. The owner of the site passed several years ago.

As far as the member who posted the ratchet, he was apparently tasked with helping sell it at auction at the time.

@3baygarage that would make sense for the issues, thanks for the insight. Maybe I'll be luck enough for another one of them to pop up sometime in the future
