What do you guys think of the craftsman 82344 multimeter for occasional home use? I saw them in sears today and thought they were kind of nifty. I'd mostly use it for automotive stuff like voltage drop testing and measuring parasitic draw etc.

I have that meter and it works well for my DIY projects.

I've used it for auto work and this past weekend checking breakers and outlets. The one problem I've had with it was the probes were not long enough to test a 250v outlet.

However, it is the only meter I have owned, so I do not have anything to compare it.

I've never used that particular meter, but I've never seen a digital meter that wasn't pretty accurate. I've checked my giveaway/throwaway meter from HF against my Flukes and Snap-On and they are really close so I'd expect a re-branded extech to be plenty good.

I'm sure it's fine. However, it looks like it is unfused. You may want to spend a couple more bucks for a fused protected multimeter. That way, you don't fry the meter if you test something beyond it's capacity.

I really don't think a DIY'er needs a super expensive multimeter. However, two features I think are really nice is autoranging and fused circuit protection. You can certainly find that in the $30-50 range.

They are fused.
