You think they could have spent the extra 5 cents to laser both sides of the tool.

Considering it has a locking mechanism, I get why they want people to set the size using the scale & lock the jaws.

Technically, this might actually be a true “Metric” adjustable wrench.

The dynamic jaw appears to have fine teeth on the bottom, and adjusts by ratcheting closed, and pulling down a slide switch to open, rather than by a worm screw.
If the ratchet teeth are spaced in millimeters, or half millimeters, or “metric” integrals, than this might actually just adjust in “Metric” sizes, rather than in “infinitely” adjustable increments, like a regular adjustable wrench that uses a worm screw.
The wrench could also adjust in fractional or decimal inch integrals, if designed that way, but metric is way more likely.
Also, the scale is in metric.

The purpose of an adjustable wrench is to have zero clearance. You put the wrench on the fastener and dial it in until there's no clearance.

Having a set of numbers on the jaw opening defeats the whole purpose of having an adjustable wrench in the first place.

I'm gathering this is more for the homeowner who would rather have one tool than a set of combination wrenches.

For those who don't have calipers handy, a marked adjustable wrench works in a pinch. It's sort of a "hmmm, this plumbing fitting is 1 ⅜", do I have a wrench that size...no...I guess I'll use this adjustable and risk rounding off the fastener."

I bought one of these: TOP Hyper Monki ZERO HM-38

Yeah, it's a funny name but the Japanese like to have fun with product name translation. TOP is a very good japanese brand. They come in different max jaw widths. Until I got one I didn't know that an adjustable wrench could be precision-made. Very nice change from the **** we all grew up with.

You'll see it's about $35 on Amazon with free shipping.

The reason is actually much more funny than that.

The Japanese domestic products do not have English on them for the English speaking people. It's for themselves. It is supposed to make them perceive it as higher quality. Most Japanese people do not understand any foreign language much at all. So what is written on there does not need to make sense, it's just a few words they recognize.
