Metric Machine Screw and Bolt Assortments

I assembled a Husky workbench with two drawers that I ordered through and picked up at Home Depot. Of course, all of the hardware was metric and the Chinese fellow who packed my hardware bag is the only Chinese guy in the world who cannot count. I was supposed to receive 36 M6-1 x 15 mm pan-head screws and 4 M8.1 x 20 mm bolts, but only received 18 and 2 respectively. I expect to be missing one or two, but missing 18 of 36? My local hardware usually has a wonderful Hillman hardware selection, but the new owner has prohibited new orders (financial problems?) so they were nearly out of any form of metric screw/bolts that would work and I was lucky to get just enough from the local Lowes to do the job.

Over the years I have amassed quite a selection of SAE nuts, bolts, washers, and machine screws and because of the way things are going, I would like to purchase the same for the basic metric sizes. I don't want to pay .50 or .75 a piece at the local big box store. I don't need much beyond decent hardware store grade as I am not doing much automotive work now that I am retired. Has anyone found a decent source for assortments like this online.

Thanks,

Tim

By the way, the workbench is very nice for what it's worth. It's not heavy-duty, but will work fine for building scale models once I build a nice hutch for it to hold the hundreds of paint, stain, and bottles of various home brew concoctions that I use to weather my models.

I've bought several assortments from Amazon. All seems to be about the same as I'd get out of the bins at a hardware store, but much cheaper. I've bought boxes of stuff I use a fair number of from various sources, which is cheaper, and they're usually a bit nicer.

Also: call Husky and tell them you don't have the hardware you need. They will send it to you, because they'd much rather do that than have you return the thing (which is what most people would do.)

I agree. Call Husky 1-888-HD-HUSKY (1-888-434-8759) and get the hardware you've paid for. Since you are missing 1/2 of the hardware I'd say a whole bag is missing. Also call the Home Depot Customer Service Line 1 (800) 466-3337. A quick explanation of your plight should get you about a 30% credit.

The fact he's missing exactly half also makes me think the second bag is still stuck in the box or something.

To answer the OP's question. I get bolt/nut/washer assortments from Amazon. I have quite a few metric assortments with various sizes and various types.

Boltdepot.com is great.

I most often order boxes of what I need from McMaster-Carr, and store the excess in an array of the bins with little drawers. Over time, I've accumulated quite a collection, including quite a lot of the oddball stuff used on metric motorcycles, and rarely need to scramble for fasteners.

If you're in a hurry and/or cheap, some farm stores (not all) have very decent bulk quantities of basic metric hardware at great prices, since so much farm machinery is metric these days.

They won't have stuff like JIS threads (M10x1.25 pitch, for example) but for what you needed they'd have it.

The most expensive options by far are home stores (very limited, pawed-through, mostly stolen selection) and hardware stores (highly variable, but some around here have a great selection, but nosebleed pricing).

I considered that and searched each and every box and bag a second time. Even when I was done, I looked carefully as I cut the boxes to consolidate the bulk in my trash. Nothing. I tried to speak with HD, but after the foreigner on the line put me on hold, I was transferred to their vendor's phone and there was a dead line waiting for me when I finally picked a selection from the menu. I will send an e-mail.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should be able to get decent assortments of pan-head, flat-head, and cap screws alomg with nuts and washers from one of these vendors.
