I guess the manufacturers and packaging need to start realizing that there just isn't much SAE need any more and have some FULL metric sets available.
This idea of "every-other metric" size and then we have to fill in the missing sizes is .....bs
We could always buy sets that were complete from 1/4" to 1-1/4"...why not complete from 8mm to about 24mm?

There are complete sets available, you just have pay more for them like the link shows. I think many tool companies drop out the "rarely used" sizes to make the price point of the set more attractive.

I do agree, though, that it's pretty much a given that any SAE set will hit all the sizes. With metic, you KNOW they are usually skipping something.

What's funny is that my Popular Mechanics socket sets I bought in the 90's from Wal-Mart don't skip a size and go the full range (up to 26mm) with no skips.

Just a wild guess, tool companies are attempting to appeal to all possible consumers by offering full sets as well as partial sets in an effort to reach those who might only have a specific need. And there is the possible profit motive as well where they sell the cheaper partial set and then sell you additional wrenches later at much higher prices.

Bottom line is that companies ARE in business to make money, just like you and I trying to earn a living. In fact, companies are comprised of individuals trying to earn a living. :)

I know a lot of the tool companies sell smaller SAE sets then metric but not all. Usually I see 7 set SAE vs the average 10 metric but Matco for example offers the same number of SAE and metric sets.

8-19 and 10-19 [both with no skips] are what i usually see. Anything bigger in a combo wrench is seen as a niche..or a place to price gouge. The only sets i've seen that skip sizes are ones sold in Asian/European countries where they have different standards. For example in Japan you'd encounter 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19mm etc... sizes. Germany goes 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 17 etc... and ANSI 7, 8, 10, 13, 16, 18 etc... If you find metric sets that are skipping sizes chances are they're following one of those industry standards.

I bought a craftsman set recently it went up to 22mm with no skips, $50.

sure most people have the most common sizes, but how about the 32nds and 64ths sizes.
they make them and there are/have been applications for them

on the metrics I think the companies just package the most common selling wrench sizes into the smallest set, you can get the 'full' set for more money

Complete sets are out there, it's just that people have different ideas of what a complete set is. It kind of depends on what you work on too. Take the 20mm size for example, if you don't replace a GM fuel filter or need to loosen some GM ac lines, you'll never miss it. Just like 15mm and 18mm aren't missed by some people although I use them daily. To me 8-19mm covers 95% of the nuts and bolts on a late model car.
Complete sets are nice if you're into collecting and want an impressive display that collects dust. I would rather have what I need and use. Don't get me started on those Hansen racks,:wtf:

I have found that the better quality tool brands sell more complete sets of wrenches than the less bargain brand sets. Sears pulls that **** by leaving sizes out. I grew up using Craftsman, but I pretty much refuse to purchase anything from them anymore. If you want to advertise that your a quality professional tool company, act like one and give the people what they need AND want and stop skipping important sizes

For ~$80 in metric only this 18 piece isn't too bad either

Well dang, I previously bought the metric/sae sets up to 22mm and 1+1/8 for $100, I get free shipping via Sears and I can return the other sets I bought so...I just bought that set. FWIW it was $161 after additional 5% off. Probably stupid to buy it, it was another $70 with tax but I get a lot of the bigger wrenches for which I will probably never use but "nice to have" haha.

Unfortunately it is about $50 more than ONE open stock 32mm of a certain truck brand. Though I think for most non-pros and even some pros the 42 other US made wrenches might just make up the difference. :)
