Searching around and only found old news on the subject so....

I am replacing a Hubbell MH175 wallpack with an LED full cutoff fixture for my security lighting in front of the shop.

So when that's done, I will have in my hands a perfectly good Hubbell housing. Thinking about a CFL retrofit and possibly putting it up out back on a switch. Bulb life is not a huge concern, prob only run it 10-20 hrs per year. Just don't wanna jack with another MH ballast.

MH to CFL Retrofit Kit/Source Recommendations?

You can just by-pass the ballast and connect the socket leads to your supply leads. Then just screw in a CFL. But it hardly seems worth it for only 20 hours per year. Plus, you wont get anywhere near the light output of the MH lamp.

Ballast is bad now so, if I can stuff a CFL in it and use it, I'm ahead.

Just any old screw in equivalent from 1000bulbs.com or is there a better source?

Does the wall pack have a medium or mogul base lampholder?

I'm 99% sure its medium, but that's just a guess based on the last time I bought a bulb for it. I weaseled up the extension ladder last weekend to get the numbers off (MH57 MH175 120VAC ). I'll have to verify when I pull it off the front of the building.

Check out a Maxlite 11271 - SKQ60EA50 Quad Tube Screw Base CFL . It replaces 175 watt MH. Suzanne's Bargains on amazon was cheapest price I could find. If your fixture has mogul base an adapter is available which screws in to allow use of medium base.

Metal Halide lamps do not have a voltage rating, the ballast is rated for the supply voltage (hopefully) M57 means it's 175 watt. A med base lamp may be marked as M175U/med, the U (universal) means it can be operated in any position.

Roger that, I'll look for that info when I pull it down. What I gave is what I found on a sticker near the reflector. Couldn't make anything out on the bulb from my position on the ladder.

Just to ad some closure here......finished up this morning.

I bought a LED Wallpack for the front of the shop, works awesome, couldn't be happier. This one runs all night on an external photocell. Says made in USA too. I'm sure with global components though.

Re-used my old Hubbell housing I took down out front, installed it out back with a CFL from Amazon. Gutted the ballast and worked out great. Glad I waited, because when I got a good look at it, twas a Mogul base. It's on a switch, only for when we are getting in the back of the race trailers. I got this one....

Looking forward to the energy savings running all night LED vs MH
