So I've taken apart the heat-shield on my Mitutoyo micrometer and found that there is an air gap between the body of the mic and the plastic heat-shield.

Could I not insulate the metal body better by filling that air gap with some other material? (cotton, hot glue, foam etc.)

In some instances, filling an air gap can actually conduct heat. Is there a Mitutoyo forum that may have addressed this issue?

Are you seeing any appreciable measurement changes? i.e. are you measuring a standard, handling or holding the mic for a while, and then seeing the measurement change?

If it ain't broke...

Why would you think you could improve on the performance of a precision measurement tool made by a company in that bushiness for over 80 years by "tinkering" with it?

Air is a pretty good insulator in this case.

Keep your shop at 68° . When you take something to measure from another room let it sit in the shop for a while so its temperature is the same .
Much better than messing with the mic.
