Mid length hex sockets

Looking for a decent set of metric and SAE mid length hex bit sockets. Only set i've seen so far is from Snap On and i'm not trying to spend that kinda $$ at the moment...

What do you guys recommend?

Brands like grey pneumatic make impact hex which are a sort of in between length.

Capri gets a lot of good reviews from professional mechanics. There is also a blue point master set that is substantially cheaper than Snap On and it also gets good reviews

GearWrench has it. It's pretty good

I have the Gearwrench metric sets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive. Use them all the time, they're great. No complaints whatsoever, especially at the price you can buy them at.

Another vote for Koken. I recently picked up a couple to test out, and am very pleased with them.
They are a great size , and the fit is fantastic

Buy the long set and trim to the length you need.

or

Buy used hex sockets like the one I posted below that uses a set-screw and the hex doesn't have a step in it and you are set. Bonney, Proto and Snappy all make/made them and are found cheap enough on e-bay. them use "regular L-keys" and trim to length. Going this route is also great when you need to replace them due to breakage.

They do 4 different lengths in metric, I think you only get one option in inch but that happens to be what I consider a mid length, thats just the chrome with inserted hex bits.
Then there is the one piece range, impact range, ball range, bolt holding range etc.

Just checked out the GearWrench set and that's what i'm looking for!! However they only seem to be available in SAE....

I do like what Bob15 suggested....ability to remove the bit makes sense to me

I've got an impact hex socket set from Astro (pretty sure they did some kind of 2 for 1 type deal involving them a while back), and they are nice and compact.

Proto set I have at work is very nice, can put at least twice the torque on them that would and has broken most others I’ve used and none of them have twisted even slightly. Though the first three sizes do have a step, in case you’re the type that cuts them down when they twist or break instead of warrantying them. Wouldn’t consider that a dealbreaker personally up to you how much that matters
