Mid level Cut off tool for home use: pneumatic or battery powered?

I obviously understand the air hose/compressor necessity can act as a hindrance for the pneumatic... but I was kind of intrigued by the dewalt air tools at my local Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-...+dln:{572377}+qu:{dewalt+air+cut+off+tool}:qu

How do those compare to the 20v brushless version for instance?

20v will have a lot more cutting power if you are talking about a 4.5/5" grinder

It really boils down to size. If one of those 4.5" grinders will work for you, go electric. It will cut way faster. If you need something compact and small, an air powered die grinder will have way more power than an electric Dremel. The main downside with going air is the amount of air flow a die grinder needs.

For the small discs the air cookie wheel tools are great and cheap (get reversible one). Normally you using them in tight spots cutting bolts etc and don't need really long run times . air hose less hindrance than a 20V battery for things you using these tools for .

for home use, i go with corded electric, i also have a couple battery drills and drivers.

i can use it in the garage, house or yard if/when i need to.

i have air powered sanders, grinders, and impacts, about the only thing i fire the compressor up for is tire removal.

at work, in my service truck, it's mostly cordless for a 3/8" dr impact, 1/2" drill or 4 1/2" grinder for quick jobs. i have my "good" air tools for the times i need them.

If you have a decent sized compressor an air cutoff wheel is great and very low cost. But I would argue decent sized starts at 20 gallons and is far better with a 240v 60+ gallon compressor. For reference, based on how fast it drains my 20 gallon tank, I estimate my cut off wheel draws 20cfm.

I picked up a Ryobi p423 grinder a few days ago. It came with a grinding and cutoff wheel along with the cutoff guard. Figured I would try it out yesterday while making a batterey box. While i was impressed with the power of it, it drains batteries quickly. Cutting through 12 guage, i made around 120 inches of cuts on a fully charged 9 amp hr battery before it was dead.

Plastic Chinese air tools, just don't. There are plenty of well priced Taiwan air tool options from knows air tools brands.

you've found the limitations of cordless grinders.
not much battery life

brushless models do fare a little better than the old brushed models.

i wouldnt want a cordless grinder as my ONLY grinder.

Its a brushless model. Hate to see what a non brushless would be like. Think next time ill stick to the air tools and use the cordless grinder for edge cleanup. A plasma cutter is in the cards in the near feature.
