I am looking for a tool vac to replace an old Ryobi that crapped out. Bosch, Fein, and Festool have have some real nice looking units, but pricey. It does not look like Ryobi makes them anymore.

I was also on this quest, there are some decent alternatives.

Personally I went with a Karcher WD5/P with tool activated option. Overall its a decent vacuum but a good alternative to the more expensive european versions.

What is does well, activate when tool is used. Good mobility, good accessories, cheap enough filters, variable power and reduced noise.

What it is lacking, smaller diameter hose, not a very good hose (easy enough to switch out tho), overall power compared to a similarly priced Ridgid, and the "semi auto" filter clogs relatively fast even with constant filter bumps.

* do your research on "auto" filter cleaning, this one features "semi auto" meaning you have to manually activate the filter agitator to clean it with a button/lever press. It does a just OK job, but its a small filter and clogs easily regardless.

Other (nicer+more $) vacuums feature fully automatic filter cleaning that are superb compared to this. Some even have advanced filter cleaning that switches between two and you never notice loss of power, etc...

I bought mine for $125 ish, I see now they are much more $200+? Personally I wouldnt spend more than what I paid.

The other option is similar to signcrafter option, FastCap offers a wireless remote that connects via velcro. Im considering going to a Ridgid w/ more power and warranty and this for my cordless tools...

Hope this helps.

I bought one of these to use with my Ridgid vac and have been happy with it. Just throwing it out there as an option if you don't want to spend the big money for the vacs that have the tool on feature.

Link no good.. unless it's just me.

Does it need to be tool activated? It's probably worth including if this is for a shop setting or just something portable to use with a miter saw... There are alot of good cordless options for small vacs now, that you can place under a miter saw and just flip on when needed.

I use Rigid vacs, have 3 of 'em in different locations, ALL with the Dust Deputy cyclones - haven't had to clean a filter or vac in YEARS. Yeah, they're not as "cool" or compact as the "boutique" vacs, but I probably have as much $$$ in all three as ONE of the Fein/Festool versions...

Here's a new Rockler link that works -
http://www.rockler.com/search/go?p=Q&asug=&w=vacuum+switch

I have a couple of these

And one of these
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0035YGLZG/?tag=atomicindus08-20

They both work well - the advantage of the second one is SEPARATE supplies for tool and vac, necessary if you're using a heavy use (high amperage) tool, like a Bosch belt sander - that and a shop vac will pull more than 20 amps so the separate supplies are necessary... Steve

My setup is a bit more mobile, a central vacuum or even multiple shop vacs in permanent spots not very optimal. Otherwise I would be doing something similar to BukitCase.

Dollar for dollar, Ridgid is hands down the best vacuum. But it you have the coin, a Festool system is a dream to use, simple, effective, clean.
