Hello all,

I have been working on my 40x60x12 project for a few months now. I am using National Barn out of Portland TN, Paul is my sales guy. The crew has been really great and couldn't be happier with the service.

I am located in Thompson Station, 30 miles or so south of Nashville.

We are going to use this building to replace our garage with car parking, use it as a workshop and general storage around the house.

Derek.-

Here is a shot of the proposed site - picture was taken last year. As you can see there is a lot in the way.

We started clearing the land of brush and taking down the trees. I had a guy come in with a forestry machine and clear out anything under 6" in diameter and turn it into mulch. He used a back hoe to push down all the trees. We didn't want to leave stumps in the ground as it would impact the excavation process and ultimately the concrete work.

After the crew was gone, I had at least two weeks worth of work with the chainsaw. Lots of logs had to be cut up, most of the less desirable wood was just burned on site. I did end up taking down a few more trees.

Big factor to consider in a project like that - how to handle all the material. We are on a 5 acre lot and its pretty heavily wooded. I still have trees to cut up and firewood to split.

After most of the trees were taken care of the excavation company came in to prep the pad. We had to be within 2" of level across the pad. Given our site and the grade - drainage was a priority.

The dozer was on site for almost three days straight working the pad. I had no idea the level of the grade we had onsite, it just didn't look that significant. I was wrong. You can see in the pics the huge piles of dirt. We will use that once the building is up, but damn its a lot of freakin dirt.

Here is the finished pad. We are in the midst of a Middle Tennessee monsoon and the pad has had very little standing water on it.

The mounds of dirt are 20+ feet high in places.

National Barn delivered the barn package. Initial impression was damn - there is not a whole lot here. You expect to see a whole lot more sheet metal. All the pieces seem to be of good quality. Took about a week to get the build scheduled.

And then the rain started.

Jack - our builder finished digging all the holes yesterday for the large uprights. City inspector came out and approved the footings. The sucky part is we got rain again last night - so work is suspended for the day. If all goes well this weekend will be dry and we will make some progress.

Things have moved along nicely in the last week. Weather has been warm but free of rain. The crew got most of the framing work done - we should be on to the roof and sides this week. So far no issues with the build.

All the windows and small doors are installed. The crew started the wainscoting is starting to be installed. We keep running into problems with weather. This thing will hopefully get done soon.

I love the shop, that is the same size I've dreamed about except I'd like to have 14' high walls. If you don't mind me asking what was the estimate for the building materials and construction?

Here we have most of the siding up.

I don't have the paperwork in front of me so I cannot quote on the specs right now. The contract with National Barn did not break out materials vs labor, it was all inclusive in what we were quoted.

The roof pitch is 4/12 and the metal is 29 gauge.

The build crew is all done. Now its on to concrete and the front doors. We got a lot of rain over the past few days so the whole site is pretty muddy. You can see pretty much all that is left from a debris perspective. I was really impressed at how clean the job site was throughout the whole build.

Question: If you have scissors trusses giving more interior overhead room
why not install equally as high of door on (at least) one gable end so as you
could possibly back in higher truck/trailer ?????

The land layout didn't really allow for a large door on the end. Which is why we opted for the two sliding doors on either side of the building. There is a driveway on the right hand side of the building and we can access the other slider through the back yard if need be. The only thing we have that needs the clearance is a trailered sailboat.

Very Nice! looking to go with the same size barn as you. With the scissor truss, what does it give you for peak height ?
