Midpoint Track Hanger

My track house came with a 7x16 Clopay non-insulated garage door. It looks pretty flimsy as it only has 2 1/4 inch strut at the top and bottom. The track also seems flimsy.

Thus far, I added spray foam under the stiles and tightly fitted 2-inch XPS rigid insulation at each panel. I plan on installing continuous 3”x192”[ICODE][ATTACH type="full"]2245660[/ATTACH][/ICODE] struts at the second and third panels. Finally, I am painting the entire door with one coat of Kilz adhesion primer and two top coats of flat water-based paint that match wall paint.

Considering all the additional material added to the door, it will increase the weight quite a bit. I know it may sound like overkill, but I would like to add track hangers at midpoints using

1. Typical 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" 14-gauge hanger angle.
2. 5/16" tee bolts with 7/64” thick heads. I may take another 64” off with a grinder.

I will also have garage door service.

1. Add a torsion spring, as there is currently only one.
2. Add a new motor, as mine is not working.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of garage doors in existence today that are FAR heavier than yours will be after your modifications. I would not even remotely consider the need for track hangers beyond what you have now. May not even need a second spring, garage door service can answer that question pretty quickly.

My 12x12 R18 door (208 lbs?) did not require a midpoint support, but the 18x11 right next to it is wide enough to require a stiffening strut on each panel (over 600 lbs) therefore a midpoint support.
My doors may have heavy duty tracks whereas your little door may have light duty tracks.
If it sags, add some perforated angle midway.

Yes, the tracks are pretty flimsy, as I can twist them with my hand. Thanks for the advice. I live in an area prone to a lot of high winds and tornadoes. I will make sure the tee bolts don’t interfere with the rollers before construction of matching midpoint hangers. Since the wall studs align with the hangers, I may tie the hangers back to the wall with a piece of 2 x 4 blocking as well.
