Figured I would make a thread since I am finally making some progress!

In August my girlfriend and I started looking for houses - after a townhouse fell thru in September we decided to look more at houses. A nice ranch with a basically 4 car garage with 3 doors came up in our search and we both loved it. After looking at it we decided it was the perfect size and the garage was a major bonus.

So we bought it and moved in at the end of October. Since then I have slowly been making progress on the garage.

The whole house:

The garage from the outside:

Truck moved in (pic from the door to the kitchen)

All cars / toys moved in:

So as you can see the garage is pretty much a blank slate. Unfinished and begging for attention. Originally I was in a hurry to get it insulated and drywall up so I could work on the cars/bike over winter but I decided to slow down and take my time so I did things in the right order.

First thing was the garage only had three outlets - one on the wall and one above each garage for openers. So I called a buddy who is an electrician and told him I need more power in the garage because the main panel was full. He said he had a small subpanel he had swapped out at a job so he would come by and put it in. He came by - ran the pipe from the main panel and put in the subpanel before I could even say "what is that"

IMG_3833.jpg

Originally I was okay with it being surface mounted because it was just in the garage but after finding out how cheap the panels are and thinking ahead I decided I needed a bigger panel and the whole garage needs drywall anyways so I might as well flush mount it. Another buddy and I tackled this project. While we did this we ran all the conduit for the added outlets. I ended up with 12 outlets and a 220v outlet for welding. I also ran an extra pipe into the attic into a box so I can add on as I please without having to take apart the wall again.

Next I wanted a sink so I could wash my hands before going inside and its always nice to have water available! So I called a plumber buddy and he took care of that in a couple hours.

IMG_4039.jpg

Next was a lift - I knew before we even purchased the place I would be installing a lift. Originally I planned on having it just go into the attic portion and buying a full size lift. After doing some research and reading threads on here I decided on a max jax.

I am happy with it so far - Although because I have 9ft ceilings I might still end up putting an actual lift in so I can get closer to the ceiling so I can park underneath but that might just be remedied by taller extensions for the pads. Once I start doing actual work in the garage I will make that decision.

That is all I have done so far. I have a buddy who will be helping me run a gas line in the next few weeks so I can get a heater up. Planning to put it in the back corner farthest from the house. I have my eyes on a 75,000 BTU modine hot dawg.

Once the line is ran I will start insulating and putting up the drywall.

Before I do that I need to decide if I want to keep the door that is in the back left of the garage. I keep thinking it takes up too much room and it would be nice to have a work bench in that spot - other times I think a work bench might be better in the middle "bay" of the garage. The door walks out to the side of the house which is not really necessary but I am thinking it might be nice to have in the summer to create a cross breeze.

Another option would be to replace it with a window that goes over the work bench. Anyone have any opinions?

Keep the door for the cross breeze. I use our door like that all the time in the summer for ventilation. Air doesn't move around much with just the garage door open. open the back man door and it turns into a nice breeze.

Thanks for the replies! After spending some time out there last night working on the Harley I decided to keep the door because working in that corner is tight when a car is on the lift anyways. I will most likely build a work bench in the middle of the garage.

I found a guy to do the drywall for a great price and I have the entire week between Christmas and New Years off work so I am hoping to get a lot done out there.

Got some more work done this weekend:

Couple trips to lowes to get insulation and drywall:

IMG_4392.jpg

Bought the garage door kit - easy to install and looks good when done:

IMG_4395.jpg

Put the left over pieces from the garage kit to use behind the outlets - they were the perfect thickness:

IMG_4398.jpg

Got one wall completed with insulation:

A friend came over and ran the gas line:

And I got an extension cord reel and a light reel from my father for Christmas:

Small door is 8' wide 7' tall

Large door is 16' wide 7' tall

Total garage is 35' wide - 19' deep (wish it were deeper)

9' ceilings (wish they were higher)

Large part is probably 20x19 and small is 15x19 or close variation of that.

So I was in Home Depot a lot over the holidays and I kept seeing this 52" Husky box for $500. I finally looked it up online and it said 550 online. Then I remembered I could use a Lowes coupon at Home Depot and I have had about 20 10% off lowes coupons show up in the mail since I moved in. So I used the coupon and got the box for 470 out the door.
The tools in the red box and the white shelf will now move into the black box!

My girlfriends mother went a little crazy and got us the heater for the garage (seems everyone knew this was happening but me)

IMG_4442.jpg

Finished the insulation and started on the vapor barrier to keep more heat in:

A buddy and I installed the heater - hanging low for now until paint is complete:

IMG_4486.jpg

Hired another buddy and his crew to do the drywall as well. They finished today so tonight I will clean up and try to get a coat of primer on the walls and ceiling:

Made a lot of progress this last week!

We put two coats of primer down - this brought out a lot of imperfections in the drywall.

IMG_4492.jpg

The friend who I was painting with and I couldn't keep painting knowing this. He offered to come out Wednesday during the day while I was at work and add a skim coat to smooth it out as much as he could. He spent 10+ hours on the walls and I spent over 4 on the ceiling when I got home.

IMG_4503.jpg

Thursday after work I spent another 6 hours cleaning up the dust we had made.

Friday he came back out while I was at work and primed the walls again. He touched up all the spots he did a lot of work to and then did one final coat over all the walls. Another friend and I put one coat of primer on the ceiling that night.

I marked out the rough area I wanted the stripe and my girlfriend painted two coats of black

IMG_4515.jpg

IMG_4516.jpg

IMG_4518.jpg

Saturday my friend taped off the stripe and painted a light coat of black over the edges of the tape. He did this to seal the tape so if any paint bled thru it would be black and not either of the grays.

IMG_4527.jpg

IMG_4528.jpg

We laid a coat of paint on the top and the bottom

IMG_4529.jpg

IMG_4530.jpg

Worked late into the night and finished the final coats and removed the tape for the stripe!

IMG_4533.jpg

Pulled the truck back in that night at just after 2am. It had been snowing on and off all day.

IMG_4532.jpg

Sunday we spent the whole day cleaning the floors and dust off everything.

IMG_4539.jpg

It is a 3 car garage again!!

IMG_4544.jpg

Still a long way to go but at least I can start using it as a garage and do all the rest as time and money permits. Next on the list is installing the lights (waiting on the back ordered max lite fixtures) and trim out all the windows/doors.

Thanks. I cant wait for the lights to come so I can blow the insulation above the garage. That should help a lot!

Definitely don't loose the man door. You'll find when you have a heated shop... you hate to open the overhead doors for stupid stuff like taking the trash to the curb, when ups stops by...etc.

Sweet setup. . .
maybe i missed it but what kind of pickup truck is that??

i just picked up a 1986 toyota pickup. . . project name "rusty"! it is all OEM and at 200,000 miles. Doing a tuneup and going to use it for hauling my bikes to and from the track, and getting supplies to upgrade the home.

Finished this up last night. I wanted three reels but I did not want to see them all or have them block the view of the TV so I mounted them in the attic.

I used a 3/4" thick piece of MDF with 3mm rounded edgeband with half moon cut outs on each side so when they are put together it creates a circle for the wire/hose to go thru.

Nice space! I love the harley and vw rabbit truck! Did you trade the Audi in on the 4 runner? Do they come factory with the bilstein?. The helper bags will def help out when towing. I run the same bags on my dodge ram.

Yeah traded the Audi for the 4Runner. It is a TRD Pro so it comes factory with the upgraded suspension.

I had a little bit of sag with the rear of the Audi when I would pull the car trailer and that suspension was a lot stiffer than this so I figured the bags wouldn't hurt. Plus for $100 bucks its a no brainer,

Only tip i can give you is to keep the air lines seperate because when the load shifts when turning it will transfer air from one bag to the other. Alot of people like to use a T with a single air valve to fill.
