My local Farm Fleet type store keeps stainless wire in 2 lb. rolls. My welder won't take those little spools so this spring I ended up welding a stainless motor plate w/regular mig wire. So far it's held up fine.
Told a buddy about it after the fact. He said he's in the same boat so he keeps a little roll of stainless around and just pulls what he needs off the spool, strings it out and the wire feeder'll pull it through. Duh for me.

What effect does using the generic 75/25 Mig mix have?
Possible cracking and corrosion at the welded area if you were welding just stainless. I have never welded mild to stainless, so I don't know.

It just contaminates the stainless with carbon and makes it prone to rust. I do it all the time when Im building work stations at work. Most of the scrap we have laying around is 316/17-4 and the benches are usually mild square tube. Any tabs or hooks end up to be stainless. If the stuff is gonna be outside or in a salty environment I would be kinda concerned unless you could paint it. Inside though, run it and forget it.
