Now because I am new at this, is there a major difference between brands of wire or are you paying for the name like Lincoln of hobart wire. Also I don't have a shielding gas set up yet so I have been just using flux core. I plan on getting a tank soon being the flux is more than 2x the price of standard wire

My understanding is a lot of the wire is generic, meaning a lot of places simply rebadge the wire. I've run both .023 and .035 solid wire in my Lincoln 140 and 255 MIG machines, and I haven't been able to tell any difference.

If you don't want to order the wire, you can pick up a 10lb spool for $29 from Harbor Freight.

How many rolls do you need? Welding direct has a minimum order. A 10 lb roll will last you quite a while. Tractor supply has 10lb rolls for around $30 with no shipping. Is cost really your main concern?

I was wondering about performance and cost as well. As stated I have been using flux core. I used the 2 lb roll that came with the welder in about 45 min of just practicing I'm figuring I want to run atleast 1 more 10 lb roll just for practice. Then I will have to buy another roll to have for when I need it. The 10 lb rolls of hobart flux is around $80 that's why I was asking if there was much of a difference between brands. As I said I don't have a tank yet to do any shielded welding. I contacted my local gas supplier and it is $200 for a 60 cubic foot tank filled. So before buying that tank I was looking for some cheap flux to mess with in the mean time.

Amazingly my local weld supply shop is cheaper, especially when you factor in shipping. Stick with a quality wire.

I bought some small spools of alum at the lws, a lot cheaper. 4$ doesn't mean much ifg you got to drive across town for a spool once a year though.
They were using some house brand of mig wire, been changed to Washington alloy though and I didn't look at COO though but that generic China wire they had was as good as any I have ever used as good as the L56 ever ran.
I wish there was a difference but I been at this a while and cant tell.

This is the cheapest I've found. I have ordered wire and mig tips from them and had no problems with it.

Buy a good brand wire first. Why deal with wondering if it's you or the cheap wire. And yes I have seen a difference in some of the cheaper wires. On the other hand my LWS has a off brand 7018 that is my absolute favorite over all the other brands.

This is good flux core and cheap. I asked about limiting yourself to that site because shipping can be a killer. I normally use Lincoln FC on my home welder, but bought this on clearance. As for my shop welder, I use Lincoln solid wire and buy a 12lb roll for like $35 at Home Depot.

I would price out a 125 cf tank , it should only be a little more. Here's a Wisconsin supplier I go to for all my tanks.

Check out the Weldingweb site, many NY members and discussion on tanks. Might be worth joining for free. Do a search and you'll see what others pay which maybe near you.

I f you're running flux core, look at Home Depot or Lowe's. They carry Lincoln, and it is good wire.
