Well, I posted in the introduction area and mentioned starting something to document and discuss my journey of creating my dream garage.

To start, my wife and I moved from the city out to a rural home that was recently built in 2011. It literally sits in the middle of the woods. I'm an outdoorsy person so it's like living in a little piece of heaven. For the wife, city girl raised in Virginia Beach her whole life, she's adjusting :D.

This was a big step up for us. We're in our mid 30's and moved from our starter home, a 1350sqft ranch house built in 1958 that was about as basic as you can get. I'm a car guy and very mechanical, both of my grandfathers were machinists, my father a 40yr veteran mechanic, my brother a machinist. I was suffering in our first home. No garage, and not even a shed when we bought it. I had an engine lift and tons of other tools and large items stored in a little 10x12 shed I built.

Fast forward to December of 2015. We closed just before Christmas on a beautiful 2600sqft home with an excellent, unfinished on the inside, two car detached garage. https://scontent.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/12299227_10205254944921869_8023422434613851758_n.jpg?oh=7219e69155bc8c9e40356c330df5e5c1&oe=57B3E3CB

I'm beginning to finish off the inside of the garage. It's a bit of a slower process than I'd like, doing all the work myself. So I started hanging drywall on the back wall. https://scontent.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/12654639_10205664993332823_5025199427582760852_n.jpg?oh=30c9542ffb255f8ae84588ec1da08260&oe=578363ED

Then my brother came down from Ohio and brought me a few cabinets. We've only been in the house a few months. I desperately need storage and organization space. All of my things are in the middle of the garage floor in boxes, etc.. I quickly hung more drywall and we hung the few cabinets he brought https://scontent.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xft1/v/t1.0-9/12993611_10206196126770827_2957654768655706633_n.jpg?oh=9730a3a37bc4c413272bd42485ff4bbc&oe=577433DE

While my brother was visiting, we insulated and hung more drywall on the right hand side so the whole garage is nearly 80% complete, minus finishing all the seems. I travel for work, so my schedule is necessitating doing a few things out of order on this. I'll have to play catch up on the spackle and tape work before painting. I decided to start building my workbench in the back left corner.https://scontent.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/12994569_10206196127370842_5497897032045593167_n.jpg?oh=4cf7932578aac50b4248ce74fa682f8d&oe=57AB7160

For the bench, I bought Lowe's higher grade 2x4's and the Stain Grade countertop wood for the bench top. I plan to stain it and coat with Polyurethane.

Hopefully I can get everything set up the way I want before the Fall. The right hand side of the garage will have a permanent resident getting a full restoration performed. https://scontent.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/v/t1.0-9/1070008_421029341346624_1886556655_n.jpg?oh=cd8b5c3870f340916fea9f6f35034d05&oe=57BB8C73

That's all I've got for now. I'm basically just getting this kicked off and I'll add photos as I progress. Two things I'm currently contemplating are #1, how I'm going to insulate and finish the ceiling, I don't want the work of drywall up there. #2 how I'm going to finish the floor if at all. I know I'm going to be doing things that will be hard on the concrete (oil and chemical spills naturally happen over time when working on things). So I'll be hunting around this site for ideas.

More to follow... Cheers

Link wouldn't work... Metal ceiling sounds interesting. Do you still insulate with that ? Holding heat in the winter is a definite need for me.

Yes you can lay your insulation batts above , staple to the ceiling joists.

Use the search function to see if you can find some ideas here. I am using my phone so it's hard for me to do easier and post a link.

Or use the Internet for metal ceilings and add GJ.

When I get to a real computer I will find a couple of links and maybe the HD product page. Not until Saturday though.

A little updating...

So I've got my workbench about 80% the way I want it or better. Just need to figure out my orientation preference between my vise, drill press, and bench grinder.

I got this far
https://scontent.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/12987080_10206201854354013_5991124907923194243_n.jpg?oh=e825d55a2abb55b7c7c4530f36c4b49c&oe=577478E9

Then decided I wanted another 4ft. It's built in 4ft sections because that's how the prefabbed benchtop pieces came.

I got it all stained and a few coats of polyurethane applied. I then recommenced work on the back and side walls.

Right side wall is completely drywalled, need to finish seems. Left wall needs about a sheet and a half of drywall yet. My work schedule is about to get in the way. I'll make a little more progress this week and then it'll be on hold for a while.
